Given that he couldn't even get onto the sidelines last year (was not on the active roster) last year, let alone get on the field, and that BB put him on IR with a phantom shin injury, what do you know about him since then?
I liked the guy, but he is basically a rookie of which we know absolutely nothing, so putting him ahead of establsihed players is nuts. I know people here don't like Woods, but BB plays him a lot, so BB likes him, and whose opinion counts when it comes to starting and/or playing someone, ours or BB's?
Same with Maroney. Everyone talks about cutting him, while BB onlyh says good things about him. THere is a disconnect in Patriot Fannation. You can tell when BB doesn't like a guy. Look at the few things he said about Chad Jackson. Nothing complimentary. Neutral and never defended the guy. Not so with Maroney. We all judge Maroney based on what a first round pick should do. With BB, where a player was selected means nothing. It is production that counts. We seem to prefer 3.5 ypc if it comes from a UDFA over 4.3 ypc if it came from a first round pick.
I beg to differ. Mr. BB has spoke glowingly about a player that he cuts or trades a week later upon many occasions. He does the best he can to keep up a positive impression about that player in case trades or picks can be involved. It's just Psyc. #101 with him. Case in point this year, Cassel. We all knew he had to go and BB talked in terms of a wonderful long term relationship with Matt after he signed his tender.
You are absolutely right about BB playing the player that preforms or does his job foremost. Don't confuse stats with performance. Stats can be manipulative. They don't answer questions such as opponent, time of the game, conditions, personnel on the field and they only state an average, not the fact that a RB couldn't get a yard on a fourth and one but got a quick twenty when the OLB slipped when the game was out of hand or a missed block that caused a sack, perhaps a succession of tipped passes and muffs by a WR but a long gainer for thirty on his seventh try.

Seriously, I think that after Adalius Thomas Crable is the most talented OLB currently on our roster. I don't see him starting ahead of Woods day 1 based on experience, but I will be disappointed if he doesn't get significant reps and work himself into the starting lineup by the end of the year. BB always looks for players to take the biggest leap between years 1 and 2. If Crable is going to fulfill his promise I expect him to come into training camp bigger and stronger than last year, and that BB will give him every opportunity to play himself in a bigger role.
Mayo, Nobody mentions Vince Redd. He is the wild card. He is 6'6" and 263. He ran a 4.54, 40. He has a 39" vertical. He came from a smaller school (Liberty) after playing for Groh at UV so he is versed in the 3-4. He actually has NFL game experience being in 5 games with 8 tackles and a PDef. He is only 23. I don't know if I would anoint Crable as the most talented. Crable is 6'5" and 243 with a 4.64 40. I think Redd is in the mix and very much under the radar. He played decent ST's last year if I recall.
In his senior year Redd had 6.5 sacks, 12 quarterback hurries, two interceptions, six pass breakups during the first 10 games of the year.
Am I missing the dissing here? I think Redd has a leg up on Crable.

Crable hasn't played a down in a Patriots' uniform (or even been activated for a game yet) and people think he will start? Sorry, Crable was a healthy scratch for the first eight games of the season last year and couldn't even get activated for special teams. I seriously doubt he will be a starter this year.
I think if he has worked to develop his lower body more, he has a good chance of getting time as a situational pass rusher. But I don't expect much more out of him.

One more time. This is the Patriots. NONE of these wanna be starters has a leg up on anyone else. The off season strength and agility program results are unknown and the all important performance on the field in training camp where every player is evaluated on every single play by the coaches has yet to occur.
BB doesn't attempt make these decisions now, why should we?

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.
This is known as "bad luck." RAH

How do you really know Crable is the most talented OLB on the roster at AD? Based on college which means nothing? Crable just might not be adjusting to the pro level. Plenty of college superstars just don't adjust to the pro game. His lower body was a concern coming out of college and he may not have the lower body strength to push off of defenders at the pro level.
I think people are setting this guy up to be another Ben Watson or Laurence Maroney. People are proping this guy up to be the next McGinest so much that if he is anything less, he is a huge bust. Watson was getting compared to Tony Gonzales or Shannon Sharpe in this town before he ran a single route. Maroney was dubbed the next LT after his first few games of his rookie season. I think both Watson and Maroney are victims of overly lofty expectations not met. Neither were great first round draft picks so far, but neither are the busts people make them out to be either.
Personally, I think the guy may never be more than a situational pass rusher. If he didn't bulk up his lower body, I don't know if he will even be that. He does have a lot of potential, but we have seen nothing of this guy to expect anything out of him.
i think he will be a third stringer until he proves otherwise what do you guys think?
Third string? So you you have A. Thomas and Pierre Woods as starting OLB?
The backups are Tully Banta Cain and Redd? Or a draft pick? Maybe. I feel as though Crable can beat out either Banta Cain or Redd and be a Second stringer not third.

Right now it is TBC or Woods as a starting OLB. Whether one of the younger guys or a draft pick can steal that job remains to be seen. However, I thought Woods did not play well enough last year when he got his opportunity and who really knows where TBC stands in terms of being able to play everydown at the position.
I think the door is open for Redd or Crable to start...but, there is a long way to go between nowand the first game of the season.
