6 million isn't much to work with especially with the prices of players going up. Oh well will see what happens.

Brady is only making $8M this year and $6.5M in 2009... But that actually means he is overdue for his to retirement extension. Which would both lower his cap and insure they don't have to sign him in an uncapped environment. Would also make a great combination welcome home/wedding present.

Or they can convert his roster bonus to signing bonus and save a quick $1.5M this season. Miguel doesn't have the restructure on the Moss deal factored in yet. There are at least a handful of other deals that could be restructured to free up the cap they need to extend Vince.

Miguel estimates at additional $3.2M for miscellaneus needs once the season starts: Player 52 and 53 (only 51 count now), the Practice Squad, replacements for players on IR, and a replacement fund for injuries during the season.

Also, we need money for Round 1 and 2 rookies. Round 3 and beyond actually save a bit off the cap. Call this cost $2.8M.

That leaves us $6M with little flexibility if we come close. Belichick usually kept a bit more as an emergency fund. We almost always end up carrying cap money forward to the next season.
====================

BOTTOM LINE
We really have about $6M to work with. That's plenty to sign a Bodden or Springs and still have room for a wide receiver, a fullback and several jags. 4+ year veterans cost only about $80K net against the cap.

I also don't understand how Peppers, Lewis or Taylor are possible, or even an extension of Wilfork.
Bill has a saying mg, we can afford to sign anyone we want to.

PS - Bill won't be carrying any cap money forward to next season...since it will be an uncapped season.

And the alternative if a new CBA is reached with a cap, there will be a lot more contract structure flexibility to allow for restructures and cap friendly deals once the 30% rule and the rules on NLTBE and LTBE incentives go away.

Hobbs's 2009 salary is now $2,545,000 - a $2,000,000 increase from the scheduled $545,000. I had his 2009 salary at $1,485,000 figuring that his escalator would be at least as much as 2008 escalator. It was more.

Mankins's 2009 salary is now $1,400,000 - a $700,000 increase from the scheduled $700,000. I did not guess at this.

Watson's 2009 salary is now $910,000 - a $150,000 increase from the scheduled $760,000. I had his 2009 salary at $895,000 figuring that his escalator would be at least as much as 2008 escalator. It was more.

The Ghost's salary is $1,010,000 - a $480,000 increase. I thought that Ghost would earn this escalator.

I am off to catch my bus but I will be updating my cap pages later tonight so as to reflect this information.
Because I was in a rush I forgot to include Kaczur.

Kaczur's 2009 salary is now $2,270,000 - a $1,725,000 increase from the scheduled $545,000. I had his 2009 salary at $1,285,000 figuring that his escalator would be at least as much as 2008 escalator. It was more

Please present a Brady extension that significantly reduces the cap, would be acceptable to Brady (sufficient total and guaranteed monies), and is in conformance with the 30% rule. Next year it's easy, with or without a new CBA. I don't think it's doable this year, any more than it is for Seymour that we've looked at before.

I do agree that some extensions might help the cap, notably Faul, Light and Green.

I agree that if Belichick really want a particular player, he can find a way to sign him. The question always is at what cost.

They are only possible in fantasy land. It would be nice if we could sign a CB that doesn't cause other teams to burst into laughter when they read the news wire.

I would like to see us sign both Bodden and Lew Sanders.

Unless we hit on three good defensive rookies I don't see the defense being improved all that much. The team just doesn't have the cap space to sign an impact player on the d.

I don't think that we will be worse, even without a major addition.

DL - About the same
We do need a replacement for Wright, but LeKevin should be fine with a few more reps.

OLB - improved
I believe that Thomas-Woods-TBC-Redd is better than what we had late in the season.

ILB - improved
We are counting on the same three. Bruschi may be a bit less effective. Both Guyton and Mayo should be more effective.

CB - improved
I expect that we will replace the vets with equal players. Let us say that Lew Sanders re-signs. Wheatley and Wilhite should be improved and certainly contribute more than last year.

S - the same
We have Meriweather-Sanders-Spann and likely Lew Sanders and a JAG.

Will see what happens, I personally think they need a good not great upgrade or 2 at the cb and olb position if the defense is going to get better. The redzone and third down d was almost pathetic last season.

Not almost, was. We should get an upgrade at corner via free agency, rookie cbs always stink anyway. Hopefully our to sophmore CB's will make leaps in production. The LB position will be dealt with in the draft, the 23 to 34 spots are traditionally great spots to draft stud LB's in the draft. Remember, if their not ready to play full time by week one, its ok, we need them to be ready to play full time week 18.
