Did any of those others have a contract that assured them of millions of dollars more than they were worth?

Jared Allen (26)

Chiefs receive:
2008 first (?)
2008 2 thirds (?,?)

I think what this teaches us is that most GMs are pretty dense and Matt Cassell is very smart. He could scuttle any trade and wanted to go to a top notch organization. There were very few to chose from that needed a QB. KC is actually the only one I can think of. In the end, the Pats get a first round value (34 is going to land a Sean Smith/Alphonso Smith/Connor Barwin/etc) for a 7th round pick.

Yeah, it would have been great to get more value and I think Matt is worth it, but he wasn't going to go play for the a$$clowns in Minny or Detroit so speculating on what they could have offered is most likely irrelevant.

Good trade all around and let's all keep in mind that while matt was excellent for us and seemingly a great guy, he still can't carry Brady's jock.

So basically Cassel brought in slightly more value than Jason Taylor or Jeremy Shockey. But he didn't bring in as much value as Roy Williams or Jared Allen. Keep in mind that with the Jared Allen trade, the Chiefs waited all the way until the draft to maximize their value. And with the Roy Williams trade, it was done midseason. Cassel's situation is unique because the Pats tried to deal him as quickly as possible, trading him only 2 days after he was eligible to be traded to clear cap space.

I think the Cowboys got at least Detroit's 6th back, and maybe another late round pick back in 2010.

I am fine with this trade. I agree about the jock carrying thing with the Long Ball at least....

Roy Williams, Jeremy Shockey and Jason Taylor were all traded at the start of training camp or during the season. Football players have more value as the season approaches. Draft picks have more value as the draft approaches. The Branch trade was during training camp also. Apples and oranges as far as trades.

The Schaub trade is only marginally comparable. Cassell had finished the final year of his contract and received the Franchise Tag. Schaub was an RFA and the Falcons used the highest qualifying offer. So Cassell was due 14+ mil but Schaub was only due 2.3 mil. I think the most important aspects are contract size not player talent.
