Default Could Cassel's good season hurt the Patriots for this year?

this just dawned on me that if he played like crap last year we still wouldnt have made the playoffs we would have a better draft pick and he wouldnt be getting 14 mil. Now im as big of a pats fan as anyone but we didnt make the playoffs and if we hang onto him we have no money to even sign our draft pics and more thn likely will have to cut a couple valuable pieces. I def think we are going to trade him but then i again im not coach bill so i dont know. It just stinks not to know how this is going to pan out but he isnt worth taking up 14 mil of our cap whether he is the starter opening day or not. What does everyone else think? Its one thing if we made the playoffs and superbowl with cassel but we didnt!

Except any other year we SHOULD have made the playoffs. Not to mention him doing so well makes it very likely we're going to trade him for additional draft picks in the pick range we like better.

There is no downside to Cassel having as good a year as he did.

You answered your own question.
If he is not worth what we have to pay him AND we get something in return if we do AND you say it made us worth that he gets paid 14 mill, why would he be here at 14 mill?

You premise is if we make a bad decision was it bad that we get to make a decision.

We werent forced to tag him, we chose to. I agree if he stays here under the tag, tagging him was bad, which is the exact reason it wont happen.

you sound like briz, someone on this board, who was rooting for the pats to lose since week 2.
It doesnt hurt to have as many good players as you can. Think this way,if cassel sucked and god forbid brady isnt ready on opening day then who is your QB ? O'connell ?If anything its one less thing to worry about for the pats other than the financial hit which iam sure they will find a way to maneuver around somehow.I wont be surprised if they sign cassel to a 2 yr deal with some sorta bonus and then trade him later in the yr or next yr .

No chance it hurts. If Cassel had a bad season why would we want him back here anyways? He would have walked out here for nothing if he proved he couldn't fill in admirably in Brady's absense. I realized he would be gone soon as his contract runs out one way or the other, and this way is the better way. We have legit trade bait for multiple day 1 picks.

i just hope it is more of we are trading him rather then keeping him way to much money wasted when we have a team that can win now
