Default Another thought about the 2010 Pro Bowl in Miami

Now that it is Pro Bowl week, it got me thinking about the 2010 Pro Bowl that is to be played in Miami between the Conference Championships and the Super Bowl.

What was already mentioned is that both Super Bowl teams are pretty much GUARANTEED to not let their players participate. Obviously it is a high likelihood that the teams in the Super Bowl will have many players voted to the Pro Bowl (success usually equal pro bowlers). There will have to be many replacements for these players.

What I was just thinking though is........do you think the losers of the Conference Championships games will be in the mood to play the Pro Bowl only a week later? As it is right now, the Pro Bowl game is three weeks removed from their respective championship game losses. Such a short turnaround will only lead to more withdrawals from the event. Without all of these "pro bowlers" the game really won't be showcasing its best players and will just be showcasing players. Sure, as it is right now the Super Bowl loser only has a week turnaround for the game. For most of those guys who have earned their first selection, they will go to the game. The repeat Pro Bowlers usually don't show up after such a devastating loss though.

I know that many don't care about the Pro Bowl at all, but I am one of the minority of people who actually like to watch this event. It's kind of fun to have an "NFL meets Arena League" style of game featuring the NFL's best players from different teams.

The Pro Bowl is a good way to wean myself away from football. After watching the Super Bowl I still want more, but after watching the Pro Bowl the desire to watch football is over.

The NFL doesn't do anything on a whim. If it's like everything else they do, it's a well thought out business decision.

First, this may be part of negotiations with Honolulu for a more lucrative arrangement. I have no idea what that may entail, but surely there are plenty of behind the scenes deals that we are not aware of.

Second, cities invest a lot in the infrastructure, police details, etc. when hosting a Super Bowl. While the return on investment is all the visitors spending money and giving their area an economic stimulus, another event could get people to stay longer, or others to visit and bring in more dollars.

Third, cities that build new stadiums usually jump up to the top of the list to host a Super Bowl. Those new stadiums usually depend on some public financing, and this would be one more (smaller) incentive to pass a bill for local funding and help out an NFL owner.

Fourth, it may not be a coincidence that this is happening at the same time as the NFL prepares to negotiate a new CBA. Ray Lewis has already spoken out about his displeasure on the Pro Bowl moving, as the players look forward to having a mini-vacation after the end of a long season. This could conceivably be a bargaining chip for the NFL; move the Pro Bowl back to Hawaii in exchange for a concession from the NFLPA.

how will it be different from the super bowl losing team to be playing the pro bowl?

If you read my entire post, you would see that I have acknowledged this issue, but there is in fact a huge difference.

As it is right now, the Super Bowl losers do find themselves in this very situation, and what do we see happen a lot of times..........the Super Bowl losers will not show up unless the player chosen is a first time Pro Bowler. I'm glad to see Warner, Fitz, and Boldin bucking the trend this year.

My entire point, though, is that the way the Pro Bowl is set up now, it has a high liklihood of losing players from one team, the Super Bowl loser.

The way the Pro Bowl will be next year though, it will lose player from 4 teams (both Super Bowl participants will be GUARANTEED NOT to play, and the 2 championship game losers). So therefore you are not just enticing a bad turnout from any four teams, but four of the BEST teams which contain a high majority of the Pro Bowl teams.

Could you imagine if the Pro Bowl was before the Super Bowl last year and the #1-seeded Cowboys made the Super Bowl (they had 13 players on the team) or the #1 seeded Chargers the year before? Talk about a LOT of replacements.

Lets see ..... Where would players like to play the pro bowl at?

The beautiful pacific shores of Hawaii? ... or the crime filled Southern Florida/Illegal immigrants laden area of the Miami area?

Not fair to the players IMO

So now the AFC/NFC conference champs and losers most likely won't play we can see all the dallas cowboys on the NFC probowl roster .
