Brady

I think it depends on where SF thinks they are. They did go 5-4 after Nolan was fired and the NFC West is weak. Also, after years of disaster, they do need to do something in the right direction. Alex Smith isn't going to do that.

Also, they have a new stadium coming online. If the QB is holding them back, it could be well worth it.

Imagine the thoughts going through Cassel's mind as he ponders going from Ben Watson's drops to Vernon Davis' drops. He might just decide to retire....

When's the last time the Pats traded a QB to San Francisco? Was it Plunkett?

Yes. Didn't work out well for San Francisco but later great for

Oakland.

Those are trade packages which could make somebody go:

A. Is that cheaper than one would pay for a very top QB prospect in the draft?
B. How does Cassell compare in value to a top QB prospect in the draft?
C. Do salary considerations change the tentative inference from A&B?

and decide Cassell was a bargain compared w/ drafting a top-three QB.
Detroit's #20 & #33 is the one I was thinking. Just makes too much sense for Detroit which can take LT at #1 and then get their QB with those picks. Pats might have to throw in a later pick, but still I'd love that deal for NE who I think \really excels picking in the late first and for all intents and purposes would have late first rounders.

How about Tennessee for their #1. Collins contract is up.

except that cassel is part of the decision-making process on this and detroit would happen if only other options are not available

I wonder how much of a say Cassel will really get about the next team he's going to. And would he care if he's going to Detroit or not. Either way he's going to get a lot of money AND he'll be the starter!

Right. And with five picks in the first two rounds plus a likely highish Asante comp pick, the Pats shouldn't mind giving Detroit whatever later picks this year they want to retool. Heck, give them (almost) the whole draft after Round 2, comp picks aside. Maybe get one or the other conditional 2010 pick in return as part of the deal.
