Go the Miami model and try to build up both lines. Get a qb whom is ready immediately.
Plus, he isn't that old. I would take their 2nd rounder. 33 for M.Cassel. Gives them a
chance to get a couple of linemen. Say, A.Smith - T - Alabama. And, a pass-rusher
Selvie or E.Brown with Dallas pick.
I think your reasoning is right on but I don't believe the Pats can get a 1st or high 2nd for Cassel. Cassel wouldn't be under contract so a team would need to give him a significant bonus. A top pick and serious guaranteed coin for a player with one year of starting experience is a huge risk. I think a 3rd is about the ceiling on the market for Cassel. For the Pats, that isn't significantly higher than the likely comp pick if Cassel signs a market deal elsewhere. Unfortunately we missed out on the Fins business plan of trading 2nd round picks for quarterbacks...

Does anyone know the projected cap space of teams in 2009? Espeically ones that are in need of a QB. Chances are those will be the teams ready to sign him.

I hope we dont hurry up and trade him right away. We still dont know how Brady is, and Cassel would be a nice backup, with a big possibility of getting some playing time.

We could also use him to make sure Brady heals right, and not make him hurry to get back up

Not as big a risk as usng a top draft pick of a QB out of college, like Carr or harrington or Young or Russel. At least with Cassel you know he can read defenses and make the NFL throws and can stand in the pocket.

In the meantime, we have most of our cap money tied up and cannot sign FAs, though. I wouldn't mind seeing us use that cap money to blast out of the gate March one with a flurry of signings like we did in 2007.

Im not saying we shouldnt trade him. Im saying that we should weigh our options before we do. Teams are going to be killing themselves for Cassel. We should not be in a hurry. They NEED him. So we can wait until training camp. Or maybe before, but we should make sure.

A 3rd is the ceiling for Cassel?? Riight, I got a bridge in alaska I can sell you too. Cassel gets a 1st round pick in return book it. Now if it's multiple picks like 2 2nds, that might work out too, but I'd prefer offers with a 1st round pick first.

I am convinced we would get a first. Look at what Houston gave up to get Matt Schaub on two games worth of performance. I do not think it will be a top 10 but the pick will be a 1.
