Default Garcia being shopped. Maybe Belichick knew?

He has an ankle injury, but how bad is it? Maybe he could be ready by week 5 and would be willing to be a backup until he is 100%.

Default Garcia on the trading block?

This I would do. If it's true.

BUCS SHOPPING GARCIA
Posted by Mike Florio on September 11, 2008, 11:58 a.m. EDT
A league source tells us that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are trying to trade quarterback Jeff Garcia. Per the source, the Bucs are willing to take anything they can get for Garcia, who’s in the final season of a two-year contract.

The problem is the relationship between Garcia and coach Jon Gruden. They’re “ready to kill each other,” the source said.

It’s so bad that there’s a possibility (albeit slim at this point) that the Bucs will ultimately cut Garcia.

On Wednesday, Gruden declared that Brian Griese will start for the Bucs on Sunday against the Falcons. Garcia reportedly has an ankle injury.

If Garcia is cut, he’ll be entitled to receive the balance of his $2 million salary as termination pay.

Agreed; even if Cassel sets the world on fire, there's an open slot behind him.

Yeah, that's very tantalizing. Low upside, low downside. He's no worse than a league average QB. You can't say that for Cassel as of now.

Really? I disagree completely.

First, I'd rather see what Cassel has than sign any other FA.

But Garcia is a much better option than Simms or Rattay. I think it was Football Outsiders who last year was singing Garcia's praises and basically saying he is one of the most underrated QBs of this era. He's had a QB rating over 90 four seasons in his career and his career rating is 87.0. Simms has a career 71 rating and Rattay with 81.9 in much more limited playing time, for reference.

Garcia is a good starting QB in the NFL. Can't say that about Simms or Rattay.

The "how about Simms/Culpepper/Bledsoe/Unitas" threads have definitely gotten out of hand, but the fact remains that the team is down a QB. A solid vet to hold the clipboard is a natural thing to seek.

Why not? Cassel is going to get sacked a lot more than Brady did. He'll get hit a lot more after he throws the ball. That's what happens to inexperienced QBs. That means he'll have a high chance of missing snaps or games. Bring in Garcia now and you have him ready to step in if need be.
