Default Goodell: regular season will expand in near future

Came across this article:

http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn...c.php?t=451098

Some thoughts:

1) I have never been in favor of playing regular season games overseas, period.

2) I think the coaches are going to be less than thrilled. Yes, the preseason is dull for us fans, but with no more NFL Europe or rival leagues (like the XFL or USFL) the coaches are going to have even less time to evaluate new players in game situations.

Discuss.

I don't like it at all; it's a brutal season as is. They'd better increase the roster limits if this happens, because I can see a lot more injuries happening as a result.

Goodell is HORRIBLE. They've got to get this guy out of there. Terrible judgment.

First he destroys the evidence
Then he strips us of a 1st rounder
Then he pushed for a reseeding of the playoff field
Now he's going to force teams to play overseas and expand the regular season.

Can somebody please tell this guy to stop fixing things that aren't broken.

more regular season games will lead to more key players getting hurt and a lower quality of play. plus playoff teams will be more sore tired and beat up than they already are now, and if you have them in other parts of the world the travel time will also wear on them.

A business needs to expand and growth will come overseas. The 17 game format with an international game is fine under these circumstances:

Expand the roster. The player's union will not have a problem. This will probably be done with some rookie cap and expanded cap.

The injured reserve will have to be modified like baseballs D/L.

No international games late in the year.

Make it rivalry friendly.

Needless expansion leads to over-extension and failure. The NFL is in a comfortable position where it doesn't need to worry about fueling growth overseas, which hurts their product in their biggest, most important market. I'm totally opposed to games being played overseas, it's trying to tap a dry well - demand for the game just doesn't exist there. On top of that, the league is already diluted in terms of talent, expanding the schedule and potentially adding teams is going to weaken the product even more. Go ask the NHL about how uncalled for expansion worked out for them. Goodell is a fool and an idiot, and any other pejorative I can come up with pertaining to his business acumen and judgment. He'll be the ruin of the NFL at this rate.

There is a market in the UK, possibly even Germany. Last year the Superbowl was viewed by 1 in 12 people in the UK, not bad for a 'minority' sport. The game over here was a huge success and incresed viewing figures by 20% and the same could happen again after this years game.

That one game huge success won't count for much when it starts impacting the quality of play across the board. And that's the Superbowl, it's watched as an event for many, rather than as a football game. If the schedule becomes too long and rosters too diluted, the league will lose fans in their home market at a rate that no amount of overseas success could mitigate.
