So the "knowledgeable fans" i.e. self-appointed draft gurus, want to discard a 90 catch 1,000 yard receiver, when the discussion is adding tveiving talent.
Y'all forget that the only missing piece in the Pats WR corps in the AFCCG was a deep verticle WR. Pats fans forget they have one under contract in Stallworth already, and the ONE THING Randy Moss is known for is exactly that, the deep verticle reception.
Both have a virtue that others don't. They both are affordable in this CAP constrained year. They both also have played in the system and know it.
Devote this Draft to the Defense.
A few things:
Who is the 90 catch, 1,000 yard receiver? And isn't 74 catches for 911 yards more yards per catch than 90 catches, 1,000 yards?
I didn't think the lack of a deep threat was clearly the one thing missing from the receiving corp. What would a deep threat do for the Pats going 1-4 in the red zone? What did a lack of a deep threat have to do with Welker dropping a crucial third down pass? Or Ridley fumbling the ball after getting knocked out? Or Hernandez not running out of bounds at the end of the first half and Brady screwing up the clock management right after that? Or Brady throwing a couple of bad picks? Or the defense not being able to stop the Ravens' offense in the second half?
If anything, the one thing missing from the receiving corp was Gronk. I would bet the Pats would have scored more than one TD in four trips to the red zone if Gronk was in. But even then, he was not the only thing missing from the receiving corp. Other things missing that have nothing to do with a deep threat include WR depth, better blocking by the TEs, and better execution.
This whole blaming the lost last Sunday on a lack of deep threat is just not anaylzing the game. They could have easily won that game on Sunday with better execution and Talib not going down.

If they let Lloyd go because the don't want to pay him $4.9M in 2013, then Randy, at or near the veteran minimum plus incentives, might be a good pick-up.
Yeah, but Lloyd sucks. Stats mean nothing when we are factoring in fans' perceptions. Lloyd was just as bad as Ochocinco and we have the numbers to DISPROVE IT! Stop using facts in an argument where stats are irrelevant.
I'm sorry. I forgot. I know that you can twist statistics all sorts of ways to prove almost anything. Ian and those guys set up that great statistical component to this site, and the guys at pro-football-reference and Football Outsiders are amazing, but they are just wasting time better spent sacrificing small animals and howling at the moon to figure out what Belichick should do next.
On a more serious note, Brandon Lloyd turned out to be a solid - not great - but solid investment at $12 million over three years. Knowing he is locked up for the next two years along with Gronk and Hernandez (even longer) is a great starting point for the Welker negotiations, or other receivers.
This is a year to go with youth again, I think. I love Welker, but it's time to add youth and speed in place of Branch and Welker, and start thinking longer term with their money. The other position groups have been re-tooled, and this is last one that needs good players in their mid-20s rather than mid-thirties.
What's Stanley Morgan doing these days? We should get him.
A much better choice would be Gino Cappelletti. Not only could he play receiver, he could take over for Gostowski. Two problems solved by one player (that's the type of roster-saving versatility Bill loves).
Yes, he's been retired a year, but so was Moss and he came back successfully so that shouldn't be a problem.

How much is this Moss just wishing to come home? Love Randy, will root for him Sunday, but the ship is sailed for him on Route 1. Pats need a young guy, not an old guy.

Won't happen. Moss can still be productive (see: this year), but he isn't even close to the player that he was in 2009, let alone 2007. The only defense that he really succeeded in 'taking the top off' of was ours. He isn't what we need.
I would much rather see the Pats go and spend a draft pick on Tavon Austin, as admittedly risky as that would be (since it would likely have to be a 1st rounder, maybe 2nd).
