The New England Patriots defense is regaining a familiar name.

On Wednesday, free-agent linebacker Jamie Collins officially agreed to return to the Patriots for a third stint in Foxboro, the specific terms of the contract were not disclosed but ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports it is a one-year deal.

Collins’ agent David Canter formally announced the news over Twitter.

On September 28th, the Detroit Lions released Collins after failed attempts to trade him. He started 14 games for the Lions in 2020 and lead the team in total tackles with 101 last year.

In 2021, Collins started the first two games for the Lions and tallied seven total tackles with a fumble recovery before becoming a healthy scratch in week 3 prior to his release.

According to ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss, the Patriots are expected to place defensive lineman Henry Anderson on injured reserve to open up a roster spot for Collins.

Over his two prior stints with the Patriots (2013-2016, 2019), Collins recorded 328 tackles, 17.5 sacks, 13 forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, eight interceptions, and two touchdowns across 66 regular-season games to go with 56 starts.

Patriots safety Devin McCourty discussed what it meant to have Collins back at his press conference Wednesday afternoon.

Julian Edelman also shared his reaction to Collins’ return over Twitter.
