The promising rookie season of New England Patriots linebacker Josh Uche has come to an end due to a foot injury he sustained against the Buffalo Bills last week.

On Thursday afternoon, the Patriots formally placed Uche on injured reserve and ended his season.

Uche, a second round draft pick out of Michigan, played in nine games this season, starting one, and recorded nine tackles with a sack.

Earlier this week, Belichick praised Uche for his contributions in 2020.

“[We] like Josh. I think he’s done a lot of positive things for us in the kicking game and defensively has some versatility,” Belichick said. “We were kind of trying to figure that out early, what his best spot would be, and it took a little while for all that to materialize. He was inactive part of the year, but he’s definitely going to help us. He’s a good football player and we’ll be able to define his role and his situation much better next year after a year of experience with him. So, I’m looking forward to that. He’s definitely going to be an asset for us and if he continues to work and improve, he’s got a good future.”

On Instagram Thursday night, Uche reacted to the news.

“Not how I planned on ending the year, but this is only the beginning”, Uche wrote in an accompanying caption.
