One notable player who hasn’t been on hand during OTAs has been Christian Gonzalez, which has obviously led to some uncertainty surrounding his long-term future.
The Patriots exercised Gonzalez’s 5th-year option this offseason, which keeps him officially under contract through the 2027 season. However, Gonzalez is reportedly seeking a long-term deal, and with the calendar flipping to June, the two sides have yet to reach an agreement.
That leaves the talented cornerback just over a month away from entering training camp without the long-term security he’s likely looking for.
It’s a situation that remains a concern, given how important he is to their defense. Vrabel was asked about Gonzalez’s situation on Tuesday during his press conference, and he indicated that situations like this are obviously complicated. Instead, Vrabel explained that he’s forced to balance his role as head coach with his relationship with his young player as they try to work through this process.
“Well, I think that there’s, the contract is the business and the professional side of this,” said Vrabel. “The personal side, I don’t want to let anything interfere with that. I want Christian to be ready when he comes back. And I would imagine that he would be here next week. And, if he is, then we’ll coach him and be ready to move on and get him ready and get him ready to help us, and help himself.”
“Contracts are part of professional sports. I understand that. But I also know that those should remain private. And, like any contract, you want to make sure [it’s] a negotiation that everybody feels like they get something out of it. And I’ll leave it at that.”

Cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Sauce Gardner received four-year deals earlier this offseason, which will likely have an effect on these negotiations. McDuffie’s sits at the top, worth $124 million ($31 average), while Gardner’s came in just behind for a total of $120.4 million ($30.1 million average).
The belief is that Gonzalez will fall somewhere in line with those players, with the question being just how much he’s seeking. He’s currently set to earn a base salary of $2.259 this season, with his salary in 2027 then bumping up to $18.1 million.
Vrabel noted that Gonzalez took part in the inaugural MayeDay Family Foundation Celebrity Softball Classic on Sunday night in Worcester, MA, which saw 9,000+ fans attend the event. Gonzalez was one of many of Maye’s teammates supporting their QB on what Vrabel said was an amazing night.
“Well, I think it just speaks volumes to Drake and Ann-Michael [Maye], just the people that they are, to organize something like that for the fans, and where it was, and the amount of families that were out there,” said Vrabel. “That’s 10,000 people. And I would say most of them were families. The support that he got from the players, and I could imagine when they saw that it may rain, that guys could have bailed on them.”
“I think it was just an amazing night, a fun night, a little bit of competitive— some guys that I thought were better at softball. Marcus Jones played a hell of a second base, and, I was pretty impressed. And I think the guys had a good time, and it was for a great cause.”
Vrabel said the night got a little competitive, but overall, he said it was great to see Gonzalez and everyone who made the event successful.
“Just having fun,” said Vrabel. “And it was great to see Gonzo [Christian Gonzalez] and everybody else that came to support Drake and Ann-Michael.”
