Patriots Add a RB To Kick Off Night Two of the Draft

Friday night certainly started out interesting for the New England Patriots, with a Division Rival potentially throwing a little bit of a wrench into things ahead of their first selection at #38th overall.
With the Raiders sitting ahead of New England, at #37, the Miami Dolphins pulled off a late trade to jump in front of the Patriots, with Miami snagging offensive lineman Jonah Savaiinaea. He was believed to be one of the better linemen still available, and it definitely felt like that was the way New England was leaning.
That was because the Patriots ended up holding their selection all the way down until the final seconds, possibly pondering a trade down given how late they submitted their pick. Instead, they ultimately opted for what was one of the top remaining players available.

They ended up taking Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson in round two with the 38th overall selection.
In Henderson, they add an explosive back who will give offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels some interesting options heading into this season. The 5’10”, 210-pound standout had a solid final season for the Buckeyes, rushing for 1,106 yards on 144 carries with 10 rushing touchdowns, along with 27 catches for 284 yards and a touchdown as a receiver.
He’s a nice dual threat and certainly gives New England another weapon for an offense that finished at the bottom of the league last season. He’s also known as a solid pass-blocker, which is something that is definitely valued in the Patriots offense.
Analyst Austin Abbott also pointed out that Henderson was the only running back in College Football to average over seven yards per-carry, 1,000+ yards, and 750+ receiving yards last season. His 145 rushing attempts are also the least by a player who broke the 1,000 yard rushing mark last year.
Needless to say, he looks like a solid addition, with the Patriots certainly making the best out of what may have been an unexpected situation given how it all unfolded.
