There’s been a lot of talk over the last week about the future of New England Patriots Director of Scouting Eliot Wolf, but it appears the man who orchestrated both free agency and the draft this offseason is getting a promotion.

According to the team’s official website, Wolf has been promoted to Executive Vice President of Player Personnel, which now puts him fully in control of the club’s roster moving forward.

“It is an honor to accept this position with the New England Patriots,” said Wolf via a statement from the team. “I am grateful to the Kraft family for this opportunity and want to thank my family, especially my wife and children, for the support and strength they have given me as I move forward in my new role. I also want to thank all of the people I have worked with and learned from over the years.”

The team has spent the last week interviewing other possible candidates, although there didn’t appear to be much doubt that it was Wolf’s job to lose.

Wolf was a vital part of overseeing the club’s scouting as well as handling things during free agency.  New England selected eight players during the 2024 Patriots Draft, seven of which came on the offensive side of the football.

The key piece during that stretch was obviously North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye, who the team selected with the third overall selection.  Wolf admitted that they received significant interest from teams looking to move up to #3 and select Maye, but in the end, they held firm and took their QB of the future.

Now, their legacy will be tied to him, with the hopes that he can solidify a position that has been in flux since Tom Brady moved on following the 2019 season.

Maye took the field on Friday for the first time and the media got its first glimpse during what’s expected to be the lone open session, which was held Saturday.  Maye overall was sharp, getting reps with fellow draft picks Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker, among others during a fairly upbeat session in front of reporters.

Head coach Jerod Mayo spoke to the media on Saturday and said that Maye still has some work ahead of him.

“Look, he has a lot to work on,” said Mayo. “He has a lot to work on, but I have no doubt that he’ll put the time in. I know you guys saw him out, well, you didn’t see him out here yesterday, but he was here all night trying to get on the same page as everyone else.”

Mayo also was asked about their front office situation but said he was focusing on the players on the field and he’ll leave the rest to someone else.  The good news is, it appears it’s now Wolf’s job moving forward.  Given what appears to be a pretty solid draft class, that’s certainly a step in the right direction for a team that is going to need to string a few of these together as they continue rebuilding while hopefully getting back on top in the AFC East.
