While plenty of questions still remain on the offensive side of the football, the Patriots made a smart move over the weekend by promoting DeMarcus Covington to defensive coordinator.

The former defensive line coach has been a rising star here in New England, and this move helps solidify his immediate future with the team during what remains a critical offseason for new head coach Jerod Mayo.

The 34-year-old is heading into his eighth season and has been someone Mayo has a good relationship with, with the two quietly coaching up what has been a solid defensive unit over the the last couple of seasons.

The next question is obviously what will happen with Steve Belichick, who has reportedly been the one calling plays on that side of the football.  Mayo said last week that both Steve and Brian Belichick were each offered positions to remain on their sideline.  However, Covington’s promotion might complicate things for Steve, who now saw his role seemingly change a bit moving forward.

Their father, former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, remains without a football team heading into 2024 after the Atlanta Falcons opted to hire Raheem Morris last week.

The thought had been that they might have potentially moved on with their dad, but he instead has remained available despite the various coaching vacancies so far this offseason.

For now, keeping Covington in the fold helps ensure some continuity on the defensive side of the ball moving forward.

While questions still remain when it comes to the rest of the coaching staff on offense, this one checks off a key box for a team that at least has one less question as Mayo continues building his staff this offseason.
