With free agency about to start, it appears the Patriots are making sure they have a QB in the fold heading into 2021.

According to NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero, New England has agreed to terms on another one-year deal to bring Cam Newton back to the team for one more season.

The signing gives the Patriots some security simply from the fact they’ll have a starting-caliber quarterback as they look to attract free agents and rebuild their offense.  With Newton back in the mix, it will also hopefully provide him with some additional firepower heading into 2021.

With the signing being just for one-year, it also gives New England some flexibility to be able to potentially draft another player, or possibly sign someone else who could become available down the road.  The fact they signed Newton also shows they may not yet be sure how their plans might unfold and clearly, they’d rather not take any chances of heading into the season with just Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham.

Newton said in a recent interview that he believes he could be better if the opportunity presented itself again and had a full offseason with the team.  It looks like he got his wish.
