Heading into week 6 versus the rival New York Jets, the New England Patriots were seeking to take sole possession of first place in the AFC East for the first time in 2017.

In the first quarter, the Patriots got off to a terrible start as Jets quarterback Josh McCown attacked the secondary early, leading to the first score of the game.

The Patriots offense couldn’t get much going, and the Jets capitalized again to open the second, jumping out to a surprising 14-0 lead.

Desperately needing to get something going, the Patriots responded just before halftime with two quick touchdown drives in the final five minutes.

Despite an ugly start, the Patriots clawed their way back to draw even at 14 going into halftime.

Getting the ball to open the third quarter, the Patriots capitalized as Rob Gronkowski found the end zone for a second time and their first lead of the game.

A Devin McCourty interception helped setup a Stephen Gostkowski field goal as all of sudden the Patriots found themselves with 24 unanswered points and a ten point lead at 24-14 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Needing to regain control of the game, it appeared the Jets were going to cut the deficit to three following a touchdown pass from McCown to Austin Seferian-Jenkins but it was ruled upon review that he fumbled the ball in the end zone resulting in a touchback and the Patriots ball.

Controversy ensued.

According to CBS announcer Ian Eagle, “It was a fumble because he landed out of bounds without complete control of the football.”

The Jets would only be able to muster a field goal towards as the Patriots defense finished the game off leading to a 24-17 victory.
