What They're Saying: Jakobi Meyers "Really Becoming Involved"

Ian Logue

As the Patriots work with the Lions in joint practices out in Detroit, surprise receiver Jakobi Meyers continues to make a case for himself. Here's a full rundown of what's been written about him as he continues fighting for a spot in the offense.

This year’s Kenbrell Thompkins or this year’s Austin Carr?

We’re too unlucky at WR for him to turn out to be Marques Colston.

Law of averages. We will get a good receiver eventually that doesn’t take years to develop or injuries knock him out of the league. Maybe it’ll be two in one year, with Meyers and Harry.

Pats are due.

Yeah, WR is the kind of position that breeds camp phenoms. But there are different ways for a young receiver to stand out, and Meyers seems to be nailing the rarest and most important ones: getting open, and earning Tom Brady's trust.

What's encouraging is that seemed to be be his MO in college, too. Meyers' draft profiles are full of phrases like "gets open" and "consistently on the same page as his quarterback."

And Meyers ranked 2nd among all draft-eligible WRs in Football Outsiders' "TAE" stat ("targets above expectation"). Essentially, the stat compares a receiver's likeliness to be targeted in a particular situation/formation/route vs. league average. A high TAE suggests...yep, a player who gets open and has his QB's trust.

So that's all very promising. Now we just have to see some actual football. :)
