Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald reports that punter Zoltan Mesko has agreed to a four-year deal with the Patriots.

According to the report that deal includes a signing bonus of more than $187,000.  Shalise Manza Young of the Boston Globe reports that the deal is for $1.977 million with “standard rookie escalators on the back end” of the deal.

Mesko becomes the fifth draft choice to agree to a contract for the Patriots. For now Mesko is the only punter on the roster, and reports so far have been extremely positive for the charasmatic rookie.  He’s been booming punts in practice, and has also done well during other special teams drills.

Fans will finally get a chance to see him in person when training camp opens next month on July 29th.

I think this works in favor of the Patriots since they could possibly get him at 12-13 this year and 17 next year. Revis essentially makes 15 million off the bat, and essentially makes half the bonus money other teams might give him but for more years of due diligence. Pats have less on dead money vs. a longer contract if he were to suffer an injury early, and both sides can mingle on a good contract with a $12 million team option.

So Revis playing two years for the Patriots would be guaranteed $15 million and free agency and $15 million for playing, or $42 million guaranteed contract and possible FA at 32-33.

Although it seems hard for a player to get another contract that far into his career, it would be easier than trying to live up to a $18+ million into is 35-age season. And looking at the league, no team is going to give you that base, and with team control you could lose out on an entire year of FA, get cut, and end up having a whole year at a Vets minimum, and then HOPE to get someone to sign you the year after.

Revis has been smart with these one-year deals. $24 million upfront for one year of playing (base plus full bonus) vs $25 million upfront for 5-years. IMO if I was going to be injured the future bases will be useless anyway so look for Revis to organize his market for two contracts, not one, going into his 30s.

Pats could get Revs and Mc at $22 this year. And no crazy dead money or can kicking long-term. But it will have to be above 30% guarantee threshold for either to work.
