The New England Patriots had 11 of their 12 allotted game footballs under-inflated by 2 pounds of air (PSI) less than what's required by NFL regulations, according to league sources either involved or familiar with the investigation of Sunday's AFC championship game when the Patriots beat the Colts 45-7 to advance to their sixth Super Bowl.

Part of the investigation that still needs further vetting is how the 11 footballs became under-inflated. The game balls provided to each team for preparation were required to be inspected and approved by referee Walt Anderson two hours and 15 minutes before kickoff before they were returned to each team. No alteration of footballs is allowed once they are approved, under league rules and regulations.
The balls are required be inflated between 12.5 and 13.5 pounds per square inch and weigh between 14 and 15 ounces.

Ouch !..... This is not going away..... We are going to be hearing about this for years.

Not really sure what that is supposed to mean. If the officials did their job, then the balls should have been properly inflated for the game and a non-issue. They are also supposed to inspect all of the footballs.

If these are post-game, were they not used in the game or were they recovered and if so what happened to the footballs in terms of handling? I agree. If this was an inspection pre-game, then it is entirely on the officials who are charged with insuring the correct pressure.

apparently they checked them at half time and filled em up, and the patriots straight up murdered the colts.

When did they supposedly make this determination?

so what were the colt's balls weight? If they have 12 Pats game balls that are 2 lbs less than the Colts game balls, that would appear to be a problem. What am I missing?

I don't get this. I was sure they were going to say it was nothing. I was at the game and the refs meticulously wiped down the ball after each play because of the rain. They didn't notice the balls were underinflated but a receiver did? All being under by exactly two lbs. sounds like the failure of somebody's machine, although if they didn't check the balls until today, who's to say they didn't deflate between Sunday and now? Oy. I think I am going to take a few days off from all media. Too bad because I was looking forward to some good football talk. Now it's all going to be this garbage like it was today.

I agree. Regardless of the outcome, I fear the damage is already done. I was looking forward to a great week of discussions and analysis, but now this garbage will be all over the place.

lol you guys are never going to hear the end of it from opposing fans.

Not even a receiver, a linebacker.

There was a story yesterday or today that the Colts thought something was a little off with the balls they intercepted in their regular season game, so when they got another INT on Sunday, that started everything. To your point, though, if a defensive player could notice after catching one ball, how do the officials not notice all game?

BTW, it's 2lb per square inch of pressure less than that which was supposed to be in the balls. Not 2lbs weight less. FWIW.

But it seems to me that if they were ALL uniformly under inflated, then the fault lies either with the machine used to inflate them, or the referees for not doing their job properly pre-game. For heaven's sake, if it WAS tampering, how in the name of all the Gods of Football was it pulled off and so perfectly uniform? That's the key right there because there are cameras everywhere, not just the shots we see on TV and in the game film, but also security cams along the sidelines, end zones, etc. More than some casinos have. So someone took the balls, used a gauge to deflate them ALL by the same amount of 2psi, and did this with no one watching? It's absurd.

AND....... who is to say that the deflation wasn't a result of the game use, Gronk spikes, players falling on them or even weather conditions?

AND..... while we're at it, did anyone from the NFL take a look at all the Colts footballs and their inflation? Besides, if they weren't checked right at the end of the game, then the chain of custody prohibits any meaningful checks, because the Colts, had they wanted to, could have brought their game-used footballs up to a proper amount of psi inflation, or mixed them in with other footballs, etc.

This whole things sucks, and looks much more like a case of mechanical failure and/or inspection error than any intentional tampering. For myself, I just don't see how, with those footballs being brought in and out of play every series (or sooner), and with all the cameras, security personnel, fans, reporters, etc, that the team could have had anyone DO this deflation. It defies common sense.

But that's just me, you know? The media will have another sensational faux scandal on their hands, and lord knows how they love to run with any sort of rumor about New England.

Eff the lot of 'em.

The only real damage to the Patriots is if the NFL can prove that the balls were properly inflated when the official inspected them 2 hours and 15 mins before the game AND marked them. This could point to the officials not doing their job before the game.

REPORT: NFL Finds 11 of 12 Patriots Footballs Under-inflated

Ian Logue

According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen of ESPN.com, the NFL has found that footballs used by the Patriots were indeed under-inflated.

I feel sick to my stomach! This is such horsechit. There better be some reasonable explanation for this.

No sense in trying to come to meaningful conclusions without the full report available. Right now I would like to know, how they measured psi of every ball. Apparently the refs inflated them at HT to at least 12.5, no? So how do they after the games measure again and find out how it was before the refs caught up on it an reinflated them? Am I missing something?
