The Pats defense is going to give up a lot of yards all year, no doubt. Making some big plays like they did yesterday will be the key in whether or not we have the success we are hoping for.
The Jets/Dolphins game showed just how much of an advantage offenses have over defenses right now. Those are two of the better defenses, and two of the uglier offenses, yet they lit it up and put a lot of points on the board.

I think the week 1 first half domination of the Bengals was the worst thing to happen to our D. It raised expectations unrealistically through the roof.

This is a re-building defense and there are going to be growing pains. We are not a top 10 defense, but I see encouraging signs that indicate we will be soon.

Well, when the defense stinks, what else you going to do? Come up with ridiculous excuses?

The 2011 D:
According to Miguel's cap page, only 1 D starter has their contract expire after this season, Gerard Warren. That leaves 10 players returning along with Bodden and Ty Warren. Count me as a glass half full guy and I'll say the future will be brighter, especially with two returning starters, a year of experience for the younger players, and a couple of high draft choices, hopefully spent on a D lineman and stud DE/OLB (per usual). The big question in my mind is...Will the Patriots continue growing this D roster organically or will BB spend to bring in more veterans to make a run at the Super Bowl?

Personally I've earmarked 2012 as the year for the defensive explosion. Whether or not that happens depends on the development of players being in positions to make or stop plays in the next year.

I said this in another post. A lot of the problems yesterday were mental mistakes like players taking other players out of the play (like on that third and very long conversion by the Bills). Those type of things are corrected with experience.

The defense needs a lot of work to get good, but some of the problems are correctable.

Has anyone looked at the offensive stats for week 3?

Kyle Orton put up like 475 yards. How about those two "dominating" defenses in Miami last night?

Was the reason for Buffalo having the worst offense a result of talent or Trent Edwards?

Anways I'm sorry, but that was the final straw today. 30 points to the WORST offense in the NFL? The worst offense in the NFL's backup quarterback? At home? SERIOUSLY? A stat came up during the game that the Bills were 0-40 in their last forty 3rd & 10+ attempts and what do you know, they convert right after that.

The defense impressed me once this season, the first half against the Bengals. Ever since then they have been pure trash. Allowing Mark Sanchez and Ryan Fitzpatrick led offenses to score 28 and 30 points respectively is scary.

Can this team make the playoffs? Yes, but I see our peak being 10-6 at best. This defense is just awful and we haven't even played a Top 10 quarterback yet.

Now go ahead, give this star one thread and try to tell me that our defense has performed well or how we'll magically get better (against better teams at that)

The truly sad part of the defense not being very good is that the offense is clearly Superbowl caliber.

Buffalo reporters are putting it all on Trent Edwards.

And you're right about the league. Huge yardage is being put up. Last night you saw a Dolphin get a perfsonal foul when a Jet WR launch himself into the defender. I'm not sure what to think about the hands off policy on WRs. I've seen Welker take awful hits that should be flagged (but were not) but on the other hand, I've seen good plays by DBs signaled penalties.

The refs seem incapable of judging what is proper from what is not.

We need a top defense now, now, now, now, now!

We can't look to the future unless we have a defense now, now, now, now, now!

There is no such thing as development unless they are good enough now, now, now, now, now!
Above is how I see a lot of people in this thread. No patience whatsoever. No looking ahead and understanding what happened here during the offseason where BB brought in rookies who were captains and leaders on their teams and got rid of players who didn't have the hunger and positive approach required.

We got Arrington who got his first start, we got the rookie veteran Crable, we got Chung, Brace, Butler and Pryor who are all only 2nd years. We got McCourty, Spikes, Cunningham who are rookies. Thats a whole lot of young inexperienced players who will get better as they get more game time.

There is not a huge rush to be the best, they will be a lot better after the bye week. Then hopefully they can continue to improve and be a top D come playoff time.

I gotta say I thought that was an awful call last night.
