I'm not sure if "thug" had entered the mainstream lexicon as a way of describing a young black man at that time, but you're supporting my point by noting that many did not like Russell for no other reason than that he was an outspoken black man.
No, he's not. You're supporting the view that people are way too sensitive, though.

I didn't get the symbolism of having a patch of sod there for him to grab and toss. Oh well, must be another 'hood thang.
Yeah, nothing says 'hood like a patch of grass. ... I think it was more practical, giving him something to pull up and toss in the air. Bit of dirt, bit of grass. Cuz without it he might look, you know, silly.

I suppose it was more benign than waving a knife.
I'm more curious than ever now about the deep symbolism of urban sod tossing.

Let me begin by stating that I think troubling questions remain about Lewis's involvement in a terrible crime.
However, some of the anti-Lewis commentary in this thread has become, IMHO, racial in nature, to the point of being borderline hate speech.
You know who you are.
Hate speech? Really with this stuff? Are those same people bullying him, too? I don't like some of the crap being said about his past, either, but hate speech?

What do you want him to do? Say that two of his friends killed somebody? He already did that in court. If my friends killed somebody and some blood ended up on my clothes, you better believe I am not saving those clothes for police inspection. All in all, I can't think of anything that Lewis did that I wouldn't do in the same situation. Again, his mistake was hanging with the wrong dudes. He paid for it. And now, 13 years later, all those that don't harbor an irrational hatred for the man have forgiven and forgotten.
What are you, his lawyer? I don't have an "irrational hatred" for Ray Lewis--I don't really ever even think of the guy, except to maybe chuckle at his silly dances. But it's pretty asinine to proclaim that anyone has to "forgive and forget" that he was hanging out with his friends and, oops, two people got stabbed to death. Hey, who hasn't that happened to, right?
Please. I think if someone want to use the shorthand of "thug" for the guy, that can be excused. You seem much more worked up about the word than the fact that two people were killed. That's weird.
Nice try. MLK's strategy was to make peace with whites, never to provoke them or do anything that made them uncomfortable. Malcolm X is the better comparision. Believe me, he was labelled a "thug" and far worse.
I think what you meant to write, other than omitting the personal attack at the end, was:
I have no idea what happened that night but because I harbor an irrational hatred towards Ray Lewis, I choose to believe that he acted in a "thuggish" way.
Nope, what I meant to say is exactly what I wrote. I took your own words and proved you wrong. Deal with it.
I don't have an irrational hatred for Ray Lewis. I don't have any hatred toward the man. But I sure don't care for murderers and criminal of all ilks being given a free pass just because 1. they have money, and 2. they can play ball.
And I do resent like all hell your having the gall to play the race card when you talk to me. You know nothing about me and you have no business doing that.
So take your butthurt fanlove for that thug with you and feel free to never address me again. You lost that privilege when you hinted at my being racist or making a racist comment.
Some people, I tell you. The nerves. People should know their place - and their place is never to pull that sort of crap.
