I'm sorry, but the media's treatment of this story makes me want to vomit.

- Manning took no less than Brady. Especially if you look at the contract and see what he got up front. Let's see if Manning really plays year 4 & 5 at those salaries...
- Tom Brady has won the MVP 2 of the last 3 years he's been healthy.
- Tom Brady just won the MVP, the first unanimous winner ever.
- Peyton Manning is coming off his worst season (passer rating, INTs, yd/att) since 2002.
- Peyton Manning had his second neck surgery and won't start camp on time.

Yet the media wants us to expect that Manning took a huge discount. No, Tom Brady - the best player in the league and MVP - set the market.

The bottom line is Manning got what he's worth - money comparable to Brady, yet wants to portray himself as a saint and a team player in the media. Brady made no such proclamations when he took a nearly identical deal, coming off a deal that over the last 6 years was worth 2/3rds what Manning was.

Well the idiot owner did say he'd pay $100 M and make him the highest paid player in the league so technically he did take a little less than market value.

Talk is cheap. He went that long without a deal for a reason. Irsay might have made those statements to the media, but they never reached an agreement until Manning lowered his price.

The Colts' owner and GM were the ones touting this, not Peycheck. He appeared embarrassed in the press conference. Given his many CLIO awards, he'll easily subsidize his modest salary with more commercials.

And THIS JUST IN... Manning is a good guy and GREAT player. The vitriol for him around here is embarrassing sometimes. It screams insecurity.

Actually Manning is getting MUCH more than Brady over the first 3 years of the contract. Remember Brady is 2 years YOUNGER than Manning. Clearly the Colts wanted to front load the contract for Manning's likely most productive years. On the other hand Brady most likely has signed his last Patriot's contract, but not his final NFL contract

The funniest thing I saw is Albert Breer on his Twitter claims that in reality that Manning took less than Brady because Brady had one year left on his deal and usually if you renegotiate before the end of your contract, you take a discount. So since they are making "the same money", Brady is really making more than Manning.

Seriously, what ever happened to "the only thing that matters is the first three years of a deal"? In the first three years, Manning makes $20 million more than Brady.

He is a great player.

But I don't know how a guy who teabags the college nurse and has his Daddy bail him out over it could be quantified as a good guy. Somehow sexual harassment isn't a big deal if you're a Manning.

Nor does Manning have a history of being very well-liked amongst his teammates.

If he took less, than Brady certainly took a lot less.

Brady's extension, including the first year (last year) ends up being an AAV of about 16, I think, so I have no idea what Breer is talking about.

While Manning may indeed have taken less money than he could have made if he and his agent had played hardball during negotiations, to me this is a huge non-story. To portray somebody receiving $18 million a year as taking a hometown discount is disingenuous, at minimum. If Manning had signed for half or what he could have made, then the story is legit; signing for five percent less than what he could have otherwise made is not.

That being said, I do agree with Mogamedogz' comment that there are times when our collective homerism shines through in a less than flattering light. Manning is a great player and will be a unanimous choice to be inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.

In this particular case though I have nothing against what Manning did; however I do question the media's portrayal of this signing.
