Someone walking around and functioning normally has a GCS scale of 15. Anything below 8 is considered a severe impairment of consciousness.

Glasgow Coma Scale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
That's essentially correct. A GCS of 8 or below is an automatic indication for intubating a patient (i.e., putting in a breathing tube and putting them on what the lay press refers to as "life support"). But beyond that there can be a world of difference. Someone who comes in to an emergency room with a GCS of 5-6 and has a CT scan showing a focal bleed (subdural or epidural hematoma) could have a reasonably good prognosis with prompt surgical evacuation, whereas someone who comes in with a GCS of 3 and a diffuse edema pattern will generally do very poorly. Both the severity of the CT scan and the clinical exam are important in determining whether and how to treat. If the combination of the two is severe enough, the patient may be deemed "non-survivable" by a neuro surgeon.

Even in the worse cases it often takes a few days to progress to an actual diagnosis of "brain death". There is often secondary swelling of the injured brain which cuts of blood supply. Such patients often end up as organ donors.

It's too early to tell how bad Chris Henry's injury is, but the initial reports are not encouraging.

Soooo freakin sad. And during the holidays. I'll definitely hold a good thought for his family.

I don't feel particularly bad about this and certainly don't see it as a tragedy. A tragedy is a mother and child getting mowed down by a drunk driver or a stricken by a terminal illness.

From his previous history I don't think it is too far fetched to say this guy was a real punk. Why was his fiancee fleeing? What was this "domestic dispute" all about? Who in their right mind jumps into the back of a speeding pick up truck?

He is a wealthy young man that has had every advantage in life.
Listen, I obviously don't wish harm on anyone (well almost) and I sincerely hope he recovers but lets slow down here with all the melodrama.

Wow, good to know you're really waiting until everything is okay before you judge the situation. The guy is 26 years old, give him a break.

Yikes! We usually see a fund set up to help the player's children in these types of situations, but I guess you won't be contributing.

Honestly, if he hasn't provided for his kids and needs a fund.... that's just sad. Just a million dollars would have provided for them for life (invested properly, of course).

I feel bad for his family, not him. Doing that sort of thing is just...selfish. When you risk your life doing something which from the outside has more to do with his machismo than anything else...it's just selfish for him to have put his family and friends in a position where part of their lives are going to be taken by grief.

Like I said... grieve for the family and hope the man pulls through to learn a lesson for once.

From a web news report: Henry is engaged to Loleini Tonga, and the couple has been raising three children. Tonga's MySpace page identifies herself as "Mrs. C. Henry" and has a picture of her next to a person who appears to be Henry. She also has a post from Tuesday talking about buying wedding rings.

This concept of raising three kids and then thinking about getting married ... I wonder if this had something to do with the domestic dispute. So, from the reports it seems that she got in the pickup and took off, he jumped into the back and then fell out while she was driving. Then she kept going.

May he find peace in death that he couldn't get hold of in life.
