OT: Bucs trade Gaines Adams, former #4 overall, to Bears
Quote:
Bucs send DE Gaines Adams to Chicago
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Bucs have sent the fourth overall pick in the 2007 draft to Chicago for a 2010 draft pick. According to the Bears' official web site, it's a second-round selection.
Its a crap shoot on draft picks for any teams but to miss on a #4 really hurts. We complain about misssing on a high 1st rounder or a 2nd but Tampa blew it here. We still get upset over Chad Jackson. This board would crash if we missed on a pick that high!
BB has the right idea on trading down for value. Its 2 years away but I can't see us using the Raiders pick if its # 3 or 4 without trading down.

If BB sees a "can't-miss" prospect at #4, he'd take him.
More importantly, though, if there's a rookie cap in 2010 that means that they get #4 talent for, say, Jerod Mayo money. . . .

Re: Ot ...Bucks trade #4 overall pick to the Bears
Adams has been a big disappointment for Tampa Bay this year. Prior to this he's been okay but he never lived up to his draft status, exacerbated by the success of Adrian Peterson and Patrick Willis in the eyes of Bucs fans; Peterson was taken three picks later and Willis seven picks later.
Tampa Bay has a new coach and new GM and although they have never said so, it's been obvious since their lack of movement in last spring's free agent market that 2009 was a throwaway year with an eye on 2010 or beyond.
Not that it was needed, but this news should help the Pats a little bit next week in London. They already had depth issues on both lines even before the trade.
Chicago may see themselves in a bit more of a win-now situation after trading for Cutler. The NFC North may be an interesting division to watch this year between the Bears, Vikings and Packers.

Hmmm.. I can't think of any other teams that could use some pass rush help... I would give up one of the Pats 2nd rounders for someone as talented as Adams.

There will not be a rookie cap in 2010. That's been announced. Before they get a rookie cap they need to negotiate a CBA, far enough in advance of the draft. Earliest it could happen is 2011.

Typo on my part. I meant 2011.

Somebody at Rotoworld doesn't like Tampa Bay's defensive coordinator: Gaines Adams
Quote:
While Bucs GM Mark Dominik mails in the season by dealing off his most gifted pass rusher and nearing insertion of an underclassman rookie QB, Bears GM Jerry Angelo is in the talent acquisition business. Trading first-day picks isn't advised, except when the return is a 26-year-old with dominating ability and a contract through 2012. Jim Bates, who's clearly lost his touch, couldn't get enough out of Adams in his first season as Bucs defensive coordinator. It's a good bet that Bears defensive line coach Rod Marinelli will.
