The NBA seems to have part of the solution. A rookie salary scale with slotting and no holdouts, usually a three year deal (IIRC) and they get the big bucks with their second deal when they have proven themselves. No signing bonuses but the contracts are guaranteed so once signed, there is the risk of a extended disability for an injury that an NFL player would play through.
