Default Burgess a no-show

The Raiders don't start practice until Thursday, but they had mandatory meetings Wednesday, making Burgess and Heyward-Bey officially holdouts.

Maybe the Pats will offer less and still get their man.

Rotoworld is reporting that Burgess plans to hold out because he's not happy with his current contract and his role with the team. Look for the Raiders and Pats to resume talks.

The problem is Al Davis is a wild card. This is a guy who could have traded Marcus Allen for a high draft pick or two but rather had him sitting on the bench not playing for the Raiders than give into his demands for a trade. The chances of Davis trading to Burgess to the Pats may hinge on if he is still bitter for looking like a fool in the Moss trade and claiming collusion.

Would Burgess be a good fit in our system? I don't want the Pats to waste a draft pick on a guy that won't produce in our system. After we stole Moss from Mr. Davis, I doubt highly that he will take anything lower than a 3rd round pick.

He played well when Rob Ryan employed the Patriots version of the 3-4 in Oakland, but they only played it sporatically and never switched completely to the 3-4 because they didn't have the personnel in other areas. So, the answer is probably yet. An added plus is that he knows the system at least a decent amount since Rob Ryan was his DC for a number of years.

And there is another issue too......

Moss wanted out of Oakland and was willing to take a pay cut to play for a team that had a shot at winning.

Burgess isn't looking for ring...he is looking for more cash. If Crazy Al isn't willing to overpay him, why the heck should the Pats?

Tops on the surprise list was the truancy of two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Derrick Burgess, who is the only player under contract who did not report for duty.

Burgess is in the final year of his contract that pays him $2 million on top of a $1.5 million roster bonus that was already paid.

This isn't about getting more money out of the Raiders. This is about getting cut or traded now so he can get out of Oakland after four losing seasons. Every day Burgess does not report, it costs him in excess of $17,000 per day, according to Home | ProFootballTalk.com.

"He is not here by choice," Cable said.

I'd think at the very least he could be a better 3rd down pass rusher than any of the options currently on the roster.

he might get hurt (injury problems)
he might not play OLB well
he might want money

what's the most in a draft pick that we're willing to trade for him? A fifth?
