Default UMass blows it against SIU

What a way to lose to the Salukis. They led by as many as 15, I believe, and led late in the game until SIU went on a 12-0 run for an 80-73 win. UMass lost a trip to Madison Square Garden to play Duke. They just tired down the stretch.

Well, hopefully they can keep up what they did in the first half against Memphis on Monday. And hopefully Luke Bonner isn't seriously injured.

What happened to Bonner?

I hope Kellog learns to keeps the team in shape the way Travis Ford did. I'm skeptical on Kellog. I get the sens that if he didn't play for Calipari he'd be coaching high school right now.

Some SIU player fell on Bonner's left knee. They were letting a lot of contact go because SIU plays an extremely physical style. Bonner was last seen on crutches.

Way, way too early to get down on Kellogg. This was among the hardest circumstances to step into: a rookie coach installing a completely new system with the least amount of practice possible (only teams participating in this tournament were allowed to start the season so early), on the road in a pain in the ass place to get to where the home team almost never loses and playing 2 games in 24 hours. And with all that, and with the starting 7 foot center going down, and with the senior point guard team leader having the worst game of his career, they still had the home team down by 15 before they ran out of gas and fresh bodies. Gaffney had to play the entire second half and 37 out of 40 minutes overall without anybody to spell him.

Disappointing way to lose, but if that's the worst Kellogg could do, we would be in for an amazing season. Unfortunately, I think we may have lost Bonner, which is going to have us playing freshmen in the frontcourt for the rest of the year. This season is going to be a learning experience regardless.

I'll give Kellog a chance. Ford ran the squad like crazy in practice to keep them in shape. I hope Kellog does the same. Does he have the team playing primarily man to man defense like Calipari? Gafney is an awesome defender.

I moved from western mass to NH so I can no longer see any locally televised games : (
Thanks for filling me in on UMass Hoops.

Official prognosis for Bonner is a strained MCL. They're hoping he can return by the middle of next month. That would be great news, I thought he was done.

85-81 loss to BC in overtime... what a heartbreaking way to end a great, exciting game.

Tony Gaffney is my favorite college athlete of all time. Never mind those big free throws he missed. If it wasn't for him, we lose that game by double digits. Those rebound dunks, the tip-in off of the Chris Lowe missed FT... how does he do it? He's always in the right place.

T-Gaff is ridiculous. Where did this new game of his come from? And the crazy thing is he's doing it every game. He's the tasmanian devil out there.
