Default Jeff Demps Turning Pro

FWIW, after winning a silver medal as part of the US' 4x100 meter relay team, former Florida RB Jeff Demps has announced he's turning pro.

Interest from the Patriots, perhaps?

He would be an absolute nightmare on the return teams and lined up in the slot, should he understand our offense. I wouldn't mind giving him a look even though, at his size, he's one massive hit away from IR.

If we had a way to red shirt him for a year, I think he would make a great addition for next year even though he breaks the BB football is the most important thing in your life rule.

But even BB knows, you can't teach speed.

This is true, but in his case - the most important thing in his life was still competing. There's nothing more competitive or demanding than the Olympics.

Belichick's rule is in place b/c it fosters an environment where players all work together with the same common goal. An Olympic athlete will get that. What Belichick wants to see is work ethic, dedication, competitiveness.

I saw somewhere that Tampa Bay might be interested in him. Close to home I guess.

Hmm.. 5'7 6/8" tall and 191 lbs..

The question is what is his field vision like? You can be fast as hell and have no field vision, so you accomplish nothing but running into piles.

Hoooooooooooooo BOY.

1 ~ He goes down too easily on Contact, so running up the Gut should only be used as a Change Up.

2 ~ His lack of physicality ~ so far ~ prevents'm from being a legitimate Split Out Threat, as well.

3 ~ He's been injury prone, though he may very well add some beef, now that the Olympics are completed.

BUT...

1 ~ His Fluidity, navigating the Field, is amazing.

2 ~ His Lateral Velocity is phenomenal.

3 ~ And his Ricochet, exploding out'f'is Breaks, is utterly preposterous.

His Processing Speed is unremarkable, but Processing Speed, like Instinct, is a product not only of natural Talent, but of Training, as well: With 100% ~ rather than, say, 25% ~ of his time and energy now committed to FootBall, we may very well see substantial improvement, there, over the next year or two.

And my GOD, could he be deadly out'f the Slot!!

Jeff Demps ~ My Prospectus

My greatest concern would be about his ability to Block effectively. He's not been a very physical player. If that was simply a product of a cautious approach, to save himself from injury, due to an Olympian focus that is no longer in his way...and if he can satisfy Mad Bill at an interview that he's prepared to give'is all for'is teammates at all times ~ and probably strap on a few more pounds of beef ~ then I would love to see us bring'm in.

I don't want any O Backs on the roster who can't Run, Block, and Receive effectively, and as of now only Vereen and WoodHead seem to me to be likely to produce on all three accounts, so I'd be very interested.

Of course, if he isn't prepared ~ or, ultimately, able ~ to knock the occasional Blitzer on'is @$$, then I'd say Thanks But NO Thanks!!

Ok so let me see if I have this straight. We sign Demps and line him up in the slot split to the left with Lloyd at WR and Hernandez at TE. On the other side we have one of Branch/Stallworth/Gaffney at WR and Welker in the slot.

Now when the ball is snapped for the pass play, Demps will be covered by a LINEBACKER. This is a dream mismatch for the Pats offense.

But because Demps can't block, you want to pass on getting the ball to a guy with 4.2 speed in the open field with a LINEBACKER twenty or so yards in the rearview mirror.

What am I missing?

Amidst reports that Demps is going to sign in the next 24 hours, we have this from a Florida Gators blogger...

Might be something, might be nothing...but I did find it interesting he's flying to Boston when his decision is imminent.
