BUT

USC under Carroll consistently recruits some of the nation's finest athletes. It would be foolish to ignore them.
I do like Lawrence Jackson. And also Rivers, but for a 4-3 team. They're going to be very good players. But wow, has USC put out some awful busts recently. Especially the top picks. UTexas has a similar problem. It's like the top players think the money they get from the NFL is just payment for what they did in college, not what they will do in the pros. Frankly, USC and Texas football are bigger than the NFL in a lot of ways. The players who go there seem to feel that everything afterwards is just a let down.

TEAMS LEERY OF USC PLAYERS?

Posted by Mike Florio on April 24, 2008, 10:08 p.m.
There’s a growing sense in some league circles that incoming players from the University of Southern California merit extra scrutiny during the endless buildup to the draft.
The concern is that too many of the players who emerge from the Trojan program love the SoCal lifestyle more than they love football.
Though it’s always dangerous to generalize (but what the hell, we’ll do it anyway), there have been a surprising number of busts to emerge from Pete Carroll’s no-pay (by the school) paradise.
In 2003, the Trojans sent a trio of solid players into the league: Carson Palmer, Troy Polamalu, and Justin Fargas. Since then, however, the only guy who has proven to be a consistent high-end talent is linebacker Lofa Tatupu. The growing parade of busts includes Keary Colbert, Shaun Cody, Mike Patterson, Mike Williams, Darnell Bing, Dominique Byrd, Frostee Rucker, Winston Justice, Reggie Bush (relative to his draft status and hype), and Dwayne Jarrett.
As to Matt Leinart and LenDale White, the jury is still out, but might be coming back soon. There already are signs that football isn’t their top priority. Otherwise, White wouldn’t go blowfish in the offseason and Leinart would be exuding the demeanor of a guy who intends to be a starting NFL quarterback for a long time.
Every player is different, but it could be that the same thing that attracts them to play in L.A. is the same thing that makes them more attracted to the perks of being a pro athlete than to doing whatever is necessary to be the best of the best in their profession.

not only that. USC players don't do well in the NFL. They have very little competition in PAC 10 play. Reggie Bush and Matt Leinhart aren't that great.

"He’s the greatest quarterback to ever play the game. He goes from being a rookie that nobody is expecting anything from, to taking over with people saying he can’t do it, to winning three Super Bowls....It should already be obvious he’s the greatest quarterback to ever have played. "

You have got to be joking me. Pac 10 is weak? Absolutely ridiculous.

Matt Ryan and Chris Long play in a basketball conference. Top 5 teams beware!

Just going to post something similar. Rey Maualuga will be one of the most sought after players next year, the top LB going in to the draft IMO, and I think every team will love him. If they don't already.

Not going to comment on the draft issue itself.
Defensively speaking, I think the Carroll/Sidwell defense was better than average though.

I think this article is spot on. The Pats asking Cason whats the most important thing he had sacrificed to play football shows that they want smart, high character guys that love football first.

I also think BB did not particularily care for the defensive system used at USC. However the last 2 years, USC started experimenting with 3 man lines in order to get all those talented LBers on the field (Cushings, Malulanga, Jackson, Williams and Rivers) Once that happened, BB started sniffing around and last year brought in Lua, probably to learn more about what USC was doing, scheming and teaching.
I would not be surprised to see BB start a Southern California offseason retreat next season.

Regardless, BB should be drooling at the chance to draft Cushings and Maluanga next season, if football is the most important thing in their lives.
