Default Chris Long vs Vern Gholston

All the draft people put Chris Long at the top of the draft.

I'm beginning to wonder if he really is better than Gholston.
Granted ... all depends what you are looking for a player who
is more DE or more OLB. Watching both of them play and I'm not
totally convinced Long is a better DE than Gholston ... not in a slam
dunk kind of way anyways.

So, my question to this forum is:
Do you think it's a slam dunk that Chris Long is a better pick than Vern Gholston if you need a DE?

I ask it that way because Gholston seems a slam dunk better at OLB than Long.

i have seen long be called an OLB for a 3-4 scheme....what gives you the impression he is so bad at it?

Big slam dunk. I would absolutely love Chris Long, but no chance we get him.

Long is a much better football player than Gholston. Better motor, MUCH better technique. While Gholston is more of a pure speed rusher with incredible strength (if that makes any sense), Long is a power DE with incredible athleticism. Gholston is an excellent prospect in his own right, but Long should be able to make a great impact from day 1.

IMO Long is better, and I don't think it's close. I wouldn't mind either though...

I'm not sold on them either transitioning to OLB. However, if I had to chose just one, it would be Gholston. He's strong, fast, and has a quick burst of the line. Lastly, I think Long might be too big to be a OLB. But the DE that looks to have the easiest transition from DE to LB is Quinton Groves from Auburn. I remember I watched him earlier this year and the announcers were saying how great he was, yet the only DE that was getting love was Gholston. Let me tell you, Groves is extremely quick off of the line and has the ability to change games. Also, he has played OLB during his time at Auburn, so switching to LB wouldn't be anything new to him. In addition, I think his 40 time was a 4.52 which is fast for a DE or LB. If the Pats can't get Gholston, I would love for them to trade down until they feel they have to take Groves.

Long played in a 3-4 as a DE and I can't recall seeing him ever line up as an OLB. He may turn out fine, but he would be a project...not a sure thing. At his worst, Gholston would be a beast off the edge in pass D and a liability in coverage and against the run. If you are looking for a 3-4 OLB, I think you take Gholston.

Groves is my favorite option, if the Patriots can trade down.

I ask it that way because Gholston seems a slam dunk better at OLB than Long.

Truth be told,
1. Gholston is the better prospect
2. The fans love Chris Long more than the Pats do. Not saying they don't like him or wouldn't consider him at a certain point but they won't trade up for him. He's not a can't miss prospect to them and they like 7+ more options at this time. He's a great kid but it might shock some fans what direction they like best when it comes to Long and Gholston. By the way Chris won't be there at #7 and they won't trade up for him either so he will be moot and if he falls Chris Long fans better hope they don't have a very good trade down option because some fans might be in shock.
Both these guys have great potential but they are not "Slam Dunks" at the OLB position in the Pats minds right now until they give them both a BB workout. The problem is they have to be so much better than other options in this draft that would make the Pats move a Pro Bowl OLB who they paid well to the ILB and neither of these 2 have convinced them yet. They wont pick a 3rd down pass rush specialists with #7 and pay him to play 1 down. This is a good LB class, But there is no Patrick Willis emerging at this time.

I think Long will be better than Gholston at any position.
