Default Kiper: Brooks Reed will be a First round pick

Kiper: Brooks Reed will be a first-round pick
ESPN's Mel Kiper insisted on a media conference call Wednesday that he believes Arizona DE/OLB Brooks Reed will be a first-round pick."I have Brooks Reed of Arizona going in the late first," Kiper said. "You would have thought second. But I’ll say late first." Reed's stock is soaring after an outstanding ten-yard split at the Combine. We'd guess he'll go in the mid to late 20s on April 28, but it isn't out of the question for New England to fall in love with the Clay Matthews clone and pick him 17th. Mar 9, 2:48 PM

The constant Clay Matthews comparisons are a little silly, IMO -- nobody would say that if it weren't for their hair. Reed is a lot heftier than Matthews was in college, and more powerful, and more accomplished. Matthews, meanwhile, was a much more explosive athlete.

But...the Patriots, Jets, Steelers & Packers all pick #28-32, and Reed we likely the clear choice as the best 3-4 OLB left on the board. So I'm not counting on Reed lasting to #33 either.

I also think that Reed is more explosive than Matthews. Matthews is very fast, but he needs a head of steam to get there. He doesn't hit his gear until he's about five steps in which explains the loops they frequently use him in. I like Reed much better as a Patriots fit.

IMHO, his college career doesn't justfy a high second round pick.

Oh man, I hope not. Reed and Watt are my main binkies. I saw Reed as a mid-round sleeper last fall. Since then I've seen his stock rise to late 2nd. Now Kiper says late 1st. I just don't see it. Especially not with the depth at OLB this class.

I like Reed. I like him a lot. But I think a 1st would be too much for BB. Personally I see him as closer to Cameron Wake than Clay Matthews. But he does have holes in his game. His pass rush moves need lots of refinement. Ditto his stack and shed technique. But BB and co. are the perfect ones to teach those refinements.

I agree completely. I think this is a case of draftniks putting too much weight on the workout and not enough on the tape.

I don't know if a lot of you guys listed to the podcasts on Patriots.com about the draft but they are very interesting and entertaining because they cover a lot of topics and a lot of players. One guy on their podcast swears we won't take Reed because he played in an easy scheme in college and he doesn't have a lot of football IQ. He even hired someone to teach him about NFL schemes. They also say hes only good at running around the tackle and he doesnt do a good job setting the edge and once OTs get their hands on him he can be run on. Hes also only good at running forward and not dropping into coverage and moving laterally. They also interviewed him at the combine and they said he seems dumb as a rock.

I just thought I would pass this nugget of info along. I don't think hes worth a first either and even at 33 Id say hes a reach talent wise. I would much rather trade 17 and 60 a pick in the 10-12 range and draft Quinn and then take Wilkerson at 28 and than trade 33 back into the second so we can take a G and OT in the second.

I can't believe you dumped on Reed then advocated moving up for Quinn all in the same post. Contradiction much? Quinn has his own red flags and questionmarks which include A) his ability to hold up against the run and B) having to take off nearly a year of football due to being suspended on disciplinary grounds.

Although I agree that Reed appears to be a 2nd round talent for now (as is Houston), player draft stocks change constantly. At this time before the draft, Mayo was also considered a 2nd round prospect but his stock rose drastically, pushing him up into the 1st round. That's where the Pats ended up taking him. I don't think we regret making that selection.
