Default Dontay Moch as a safety?

It has been put out there that this guy can run a 4.25 40. I'm not sure if I believe that or not. I guess we will find out come combine time? He's listed as a DE at 6'1 245 which I'm pretty sure is not going to fly in the NFL. Seems to have incredible athletic ability even though you wouldnt know it watching the East West Shrine game.

I'd be interested to see what he does in the combine. 40 time,3 cone drills, 10 yard splits, etc and how his results atch up to standard safety sized guy. 200-220. I can't imagine having a FS at 245.

Even 6'1 is a little short for LB in {people hate the word} "Belichicks system". Although I think he could be a situational pass rusher if not a full time LB depending if his ability is there.. Don't know much about him actually accept some small clips I've seen on him.

If it's hard to convert from DE to LB. Is it harder to convert to Safety? I bet he could deliver some punsihment and cover a lot of ground with his speed if he is as fast as they say he is. I wonder if BB could do something special with him, make him a versatile hybrid player like envisioned Adalius Thomas? I don't know anything of his recognition skills or how fast he picks stuff up. Just a random thought.

Anyway, I saw a moch draft that has us picking him 28 which seemed awfully high to me. Anyone know anything about this kid?

His lack of instincts is bad enough at LB, and would be horrendous at safety.

Sciz, I like you dude, but you're way off here. How often have you watched Moch play? The guy is a good football player. He definitely would not fit us at OLB, but he consistently produces. He finds the football, he pursues well, and he's a good tackler. I've seen him in coverage 30 yards downfield breaking up passes, and there's no reason why he couldn't drop five pounds and work at the new position for a year or two with good results. He could be a SS/LB hybrid with devastating speed on blitzes. He's got the size to hold up in coverage against TEs, and I think that writing him off wholesale is a bit premature.

Now. In terms of value, drafting him as a safety convert in the first two rounds is probably not a great idea. If he's available in the tail end of round three, though, or even in the fourth, he's well worth the shot. Athletes like him only come around once every year or two, and the chance to mold them into productive football players is worth taking once the initial investment is reasonable enough.

is this a joke?

playing Moch at safety is silly. Love to see him try to cover a WR.

speed alone does not qualify as ability for a position.

Moch is going to make a fantastic special teamer for some team

A DE that runs a 4.25

That's crazy, I've never seen him play but that's appealing, although he's a little small for a Pats OLB....and not big enough for a DE on any team in the NFL.

That's what they are "claiming".

Illegal contact is right. It is a crazy thought. But the thread was based on more of a question than anything. I was trying to get opinions on how hard it is to go from DE to Safety. Speed alone isn't everything, there have been plent of guys with sub 4-3 that have failed. But some are saying he does havesome good coverage skills.

I think he could play lb in the nfl in a 4-3. His size is borderline 3-4 and he would have to show he was strong enough in drills and private workouts with nfl players helping out. Seems like someone the Raiders would take with thei first pick. Dazzling speed for a guy his size if rumors are true.

GREAT, BALLSY idea, very BoilHeartesque.

As far as evaluating the Evaluators goes, Brother Reamer trumps Sciz: Both are smart, but the former has Objectivity.

And I concur: Moch will almost certainly go off the boards far too early, due to the Al Davises of the world falling in love with his "40" time.

A late 3rd or 4th Rounder would be a VERY good move on this guy, in order to develop him into precisely the MidFielder ~ Safety Hybrid that Brothers Missile and Reamer propose...I'm gonna have to come up with an appropriate NomenClature for that Gig...

"Mid Safety" sounds about right.

"Swing Safety" would be for a guy who plays Strong or Free...

And "Nickel Safety" would of course be that Safety ~ Corner Hybrid...

***

Chances are that he goes far too early...So this guy looks like a good candidate for a Phase Two move: a guy we pull in after he gets badly used by the team that originally drafts him!!
