The other safety for Clemson, FS Clemons, that is the guy who stands out when you watch Clemson play. Hamlin got chewed on quite a bit this past year, especially in coverage.
I would prefer to leave Merriweather at SS.

meriweather at SS leaves a liability in covering TE's which is what the current scheme demands
as for hamlin versus clemons, everyone's got their preferences, but clemons ain't much of a tackler
You're right. They aren't. He's a free agent. And there are questions as to why he only signed a one year deal last year and not a longer term one. Was it the Pats not being happy with him? Was it him not being happy with the Pats? Who knows. But Paxton is no guarantee.

Tanked- let me make sure I follow correctly:
You see the Pats re-signing the following:
Hochstein, Wright, James Sanders, Hanson
However, you see them cutting Jarvis Green, Vince Redd, Tyson DeVree, and Bo Ruud.
And you don't see them re-signing Seau, Colvin, Evans, Gaffney, Izzo, Harrison, Jordan, O'Neal, L. Sanders or Tank Williams.

No, he's not guaranteed, but he's already the highest-paid pure long-snapper in the game.

That's false. Paxton's 5 year deal made him the highest paid LS at the time. That deal ended prior to the 2008 season. Paxton re-signed to a one year deal for the vet minimum. He's a free agent again.
As I said, there are legitimate questions as to why Paxton only signed a one year deal. Did he not want a longer one? Was he out exploring other options to no avail? Did the Pats not think enough of him to offer him another good contract?
