Default Lovie Smith - Hypothetical Question

Let's say Lovie wanted to take it easy and have a little break from head coaching for a while and be a D-coordinator with less pressure.

Would you want him or mind him replacing Patricia as our defensive coordinator?

Again this is hypotheticals because i want to guage how highly everyone holds Patricia.

Does Romeo Crennel get that call to join the Pats defensive staff?

You can fill in any name and job to the sentence 'wanted to take it easy and have a little break from head coaching' and thew answer would be no.

So you think Patricia would be a better option over anyone is what you're saying?

I think he's saying why would you want someone on your coaching staff because they plan on taking it easy for a while. It implies lack of fire, character and desire.

Take the same proposed DC candidate and say "They want to be a DC because they really want to be a DC and focus on making the D as good as it can possibly be." and you might get a different answer.

Ask your question - is this about Lovie Smith or Matt Patricia?

As for Lovie Smith, I do not see any reason to bring him in unless there is a long-term succession plan that figures into this. If the Pats were to fish for a new DC, Rod Marinelli, the Bears' incumbent DC who will likely be fired by the new man, would be an option.

But again, the Patriots defensive issues are not a function of coaching. It's about talent, especially in the secondary. The Patriots have completely re-tooled the defense over the past four years on the fly. Next year, with the current group intact and some tweaks, the defense should be better with Patricia as a stable presence.

Please just stop. Lovie is from an entirely different coaching tree (Dungy's Tampa 2) and has no basis in or function on this staff as long as BB is still breathing. At it's peak we fairly thrashed Lovie's talented defense. Not to mention besting his defense when it mattered most as DC of the 2001 Greatest Show on Turf.

Besides Lovie is still delusional about his ability to be a HC.

Matt Patricia is the most experienced DC available for this system unless you want to argue for swapping him with Pepper or bringing back Pees or Mangini (which has about as much of a shot as hiring Lovie).

I think Matt Patricia, who IS a rocket scientist BTW, is a developing star as a coach. He appears to be a very sound and fundamental Coach. He is still young and full of piss and vinager. Early on the Defense played conservatively and simple. As they gained some experience, he infused some more sophisticated plays.

I say its fine to watch him develop, along with "his" very young Defense.

I don't see any holes in the coaching family down at Foxboro. This is a group that is primed to run the Derby right now, let alone next year.
