The O-line was poor when Cassel was in. The run game was non-existent, poor 39 was swarmed behind the line.
Let Cassel play with the the top line AND the top WR's before we ship him to NY... just kidding, but all NE cast-offs seem to end up there.

The fact that Cassel is still on the team at all means he wasn't a bust. He was a successful seventh round pick because he was the #2 QB for three years.
That said, the experiment is over. He seems to have regressed beyond the point of any real usefulness.
Is Cassel really that bad, or is the OL just flat out horrible. Of everything that has gone wrong tonight, the performance of the OL was just plain miserable!!!!!!
Kopen and the the right side of the OL gave us nothing in the first half tonight. Yates is worthless on a good day and God knows, he has not seen many good days in a Patriots uniform. Through three quarters we have what, 24 yards rushing?
Given how pathetic the OL play was tonight, I doubt Brady could have done much better tonight.
I think BB needs to work heavily with the defense on tackling and especially getting off blocks, but until we get healthy bodies back on the OL, we are going to play poorly. Not even Brady can throw on every play.
i guess we'll find out enxt week when brady plays

Better yet, he was the last player taken in the draft period. But don't let panic boy over here know that.
He wasn't Mr. Irrelevant that year, Patriot great Andy Stokes out of football powerhouse William Penn was.
I do get a kick out of all the angst caused by a 7th round, all-pro clipboard holder, though. What do we truly know about him? He's not good enough to beat out Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, or Tom Brady (nothing shameful about any of that), and the Patriot staff sees enough in him to have kept him out the roster for 3+years (no shame in any of that, either).
Do I believe that he'll be backing up #12 this year? Not really... why else would you draft Kevin O'Connell? But to call a seventh round, perennial backup a bust is a tad absurd, IMO.
Okay, since we can all agree now that Matt Cassel is a complete bust, what do we do about a QB?
I think O'Connell will be the guys sooner than later, but not this season. We need the "John Friesz" type to come in and backup.
Cassel is just SO friggin' horrible! How did he ever get to this level? He's like the kid who slides all the way through school never learning how to read or write!
What were his coaches doing at every level when they didn't notice how horrible he is?
I mean pre-season is the time when backups shine (i.e.: the king of the pre-season Michael Bishop!). Cassel just looks so confused out there!
Are you Thomas? Borges? Its preseason, worry about Meriweather, nothing else. Maybe you should coach the Patriots?

Just beat me. FWIW, though, the Pats were torn on Stokes v. Ray Ventrone at that last pick.

That's about the most level-headed description of the situation I've ever seen.
That said, I think that signing O'Connell pretty much guaranteed Cassel's exit regardless of what happened. [Think about it for a minute--either way, Cassel is a FA next offseason. All else being equal, going into the next offseason, Brady + Gutierrez w/2 yrs + backup w/1 yr > Brady + Gutierrez w/2 yrs + no one.]

Ever think of the reason they didn't play Guiterez(sp)? Maybe they are satsified with what he can do and figured to give Cassel another shot to claim a spot. Cassel is gone next season anyhow so he might be the odd guy out. It just makes too much sense at this point.

Or maybe it was because he looked worse than Cassel last week playing against the third stringers...not to mention he missed two days of practice with a bruised shoulder and when he returned to practice he was sailing throws into the VIP area of the stands... nah, that wouldn't make sense...
