But isn't a broken bone more of a binary equation? It's either healed or it isn't? I know when I broke bones when they were healed there was no concern about breaking them again. Conversely when I had a string of twisted ankles it was clear that there was weakness and a possibility for re-injuring it again easily.

So if the doctor says the bone is mended and the arm is in a cast where is the risk everyone keeps talking about?

As a result, there may be a brief period in the healing process when the fracture site is stronger than the surrounding bone. But they later reach equal strength, and the fracture site is no more or less likely to break again. Dr. Amaral said that in studies in which healed bones were subjected to bending and twisting forces, the repaired bones were capable of breaking anywhere, including the fracture site. “They never comment that it’s stronger or weaker than the rest of the bone,” he said.

If he's been cleared by the Docs to practice then his healing process must have gone well enough to necessitate such a sign-off.

At this point it becomes an issue of pain tolerance and degree of functionality (that the cast affords)

Have you forgotten? Gronk + pain = "Huh-huh-huh!"

He's ready? Put him back on the field!

Ease him in PT-wise, to help limit any risk.

I'd rather have him in top form for the playoffs rather than shaking any rust.

Knowing BB is such a hard ass playing whomever plays well, the GronkMonster is probably worried that the Hooman is doing such a good job running the Wham block against DLs that his position is at risk unless he returns soon. A desperate Brady posting those "Bledsoe Healthy, Expected to Return" old newspaper clippings on Gronk's locker isn't helping his mental state any either.

You can't give a top D like the Niners an obvious tell by using him either only on passing plays or only on running plays. The biggest part of Gronk's value is that he does both well so that the D has to play both.

interesting that Edelman returned in the exact same timeframe as Gronk returning this week would be:

Edelman - injured 10/18 v TEN, missed 2 games and a bye, returned 11/15 @ IND

Gronk - injured 11/18 v. IND, missed 3 games, possible return 12/16 v. SF

Didn't he have a plate a screws put in there....All he needs is to have a cast from the wrist down and he'll be good to go......for the last game of the season
