Book Except- "Coaching Confidential" (Parcells, Kraft, BB) - New England Patriots Forums

Daily News football columnist Gary Myers takes you inside the coach's office with new book 'Coaching Confidential' - NY Daily News

I thought that this quote summed up why Kraft is a great owner, a spectacular manager of people and a good person.

It's called "Leadership by Example".

Gifted leaders have a way of setting the tone right down to the lowest folks in the chain. We are certainly blessed, as fans, for having an owner of such a high-caliber.

The he was Parcells and either his ego was so big that he thought he was bigger than anyone else or he was trying to get fired........He must have skipped the Dale Carnegie course

Good stuff.....refreshing to get candid truths occasionally......Speaking of which, caught "A Football Life" featuring Jimmy Johnson....tremendous honesty...from a big personality. Loved how JJ outed Jerry Jones' lust for the limelight...Jones says, "I can make $10 mill today, but nobody will care. So I'm ( major paraphrasing about to occur) gonna get in front of the cameras anytime I want and play Big Shot GM (fraud) and you have to live with it.""

The Question for this A.M.......could a Kraft/Jimmy Johnson partnership have succeeded back in the day? I need to think more about that one....two polar opposites for sure

I thought the very same thing, Borg. Kraft will be the first to tell you that hes matured as an owner and it took failure (Parcells leaving and Greir and Carroll running the team into the ground) to make him realize and comprehend how very little about how to be successful in the NFL on the field and in the front office.

Certainly JJ wasn't in the same "diva" catagory or as boorish and difficult as Parcells, but the reasons he left Dallas were due to personnel responsibility and Jones being meddlesome in football operations. With that said, Kraft was similar in how he handled the 1996 draft-day debate between Parcells/Bobby Greir/offense/defense/Glenn/Tony Brackens/Duane Clemons debate where Kraft ruled that the player highest on the board should be selected (my memory of the situation).

I tend to think that if Kraft acted the exact same way and overruled JJ in the war room on draft day, he wouldn't have stuck around either.

with every excerpt that I read about Parcells, my gratitude to the fans of NE for keeping him out of the Pats HOF just grows deeper and deeper. As much as BB avoids the spotlight at all costs and constantly deflects credit, Parcell drew it it toward him and took credit.

Parcells was never as good as his reputation and quickly wore out his welcome every place he went. You know the bottom line in the entire draft room drama, was that Parcell's was DEAD WRONG! The Pats don't come close to a superbowl without Terry Glenn, and the Player Parcells would have picked left no imprint on the NFL to the point where I don't remember his name.

The fact is that any well run business creates the guidelines for running the operation and then follows them. In this case, for no apparent reason, Parcells went against the guidelines he himself had establishedk and then when he didn't get his way, ran out of the room in a hissy fit like the spoiled brat that we was.

Kraft has take his share of heat for "interfering" in that instance, but all he was really doing following the correct way to do do business that he'd believed in all his life. Its fair to give him grief for signing all those players to big contracts back in the 90's. Blame him for sticking with Bobby Greir too long, or not hiring BB in 97, but don't blame him for Parcells, he was trying to get out the door long before that happened. Parcells' best skill was knowing when it was time to leave and hiring good assistants

BTW- The funny thing is that Parcells failed at "buying the groceries, every where he went, and there was a reason the Giants didn't let him do it..

Milloy, Bruschi, Law, Johnson, Martin, McGinest, Bledsoe and Brown were drafted when Parcels was in New England. Seems like good groceries to me. Also, the Pats were the laughing stock of the NFL before Parcels arrived in 1993. I didn't like the way he left but I appreciate the foundation he built for future teams.

Think I will wait for the real book on Belichick, not sure I care all that much about Tony Dungy, Mike Shanahan, Dick Vermeil, Mike Holmgren, Brian Billick, and Joe Gibbs.

Does not make much sense to buy a book for a couple of chapters..

Joe Gibbs won superbowls with multiple QBs. If memory serves, BB has said that Shanahan probably gives him more trouble than any other coach. Billick did something that BB's never done: Win a SB with a team that's essentially the polar opposite of his coaching. Vermeil was successful after being out of the game for years. Why wouldn't you want to learn more about guys like that?
