I think so too.
I expect Gaffney back when healthy ~ in October.
But then I thought we'd go with 3 QBs this season.

They still might, although it apparently won't be the trio you and I thought it would. PFT is posting about a blog claiming that the Patriots have interest in Mike Kafka, for example.

Aww man not Kafka. Absolutely not an upgrade over Hoyer.

I think Shiancoe gets put on IR from the 53 as a possible bring him back candidate later on.

This might happen when Waters is ready to get down to work, since the 53rd slot seems like its going to Matt Tennant if Bedard can be believed.

Mike Kafka generating interest on waivers | ProFootballTalk
They have since reported that despite this report, he was not claimed, and are now doing an about face that teams see no value in him because Reid cut him.

yup.....except that there needs to be someone worth picking up

I'm not that big of a gaffney fan, but I'm hoping the idea here was to bring him back all along......some position groups have roster flexibility (extra TE, Fortson) to be able to make a pretty easy change

It seems now the New England Patriots have three slot receivers:

Wes Welker
Julian Edelman
Greg Salas

This is from Rams practice camp report (source Stlouisrams.com)

"- Spent some time with WR Greg Salas after practice today. Salas continues to look good out there and is making a seamless transition to the outside after spending most of his rookie season in the slot. Salas told me that he played on the outside quite a bit at Hawaii but was a little rusty early on. He said it’s just a matter of sharpening his technique and getting back up to speed on beating press coverage and other fundamentals that go with taking on corners instead of the occasional linebacker or safety in the slot."

So perhaps not a 3rd slot guy, but a true wideout?

Salas doesn't necessarily have to be a slot guy. He's fairly big, (6'1, 211) and runs a 4.53. Not gonna impress with blazing speed but could create separation (and we all know that if he's got even a step on the corner, Brady can fit the ball in there.)
