It appears by several sources that Gaffney has an injury. MLR says that it is to his quad and could take several weeks to fully heal. My guess is that Gaffney's injury had a lot to do with his departure here.
Schiancoe is either apparently not too far from playing, or Belichick feels that he'd rather have a full TE arsenal at his disposal for the future. The possibility exists for both.
Don't worry, there will be another WR signed and it may be a familiar face to boot. Belichick is on top of it.

There are no remaining familiar faces on the market. Bill signed the last three in existence this off season and then cut them all. And Gaffney's injury is said to be personally guesstimated to be of a week or two in remaining duration, not several weeks. That is what he has told multiple teams who are interested in working him out.
Shiancoe may yet land on IR. And word was out early yesterday that he was being cut. That usually emanates from players or agents, and may indicate he knows he's not long for the roster.

Please don't compare this team to the '06 squad. Really. The #1 receiver on that team was....wait for it....Reche Caldwell. Their team's top 4 receiving stats:
I mean, the best receiving option on the 2006 Patriots wouldn't be even the 4th best receiving option on the 2012 Patriots.
They may have some depth issues, but the top 4 receiving options for this football team are probably the best group of 4 that any team in the league has.

I gave your post a "Like", but I do wish folks would quit $hitting all over Reche Caldwell.
He was brought in here to be the #3 WR and caught 61 passes for 760, had a 2yr $2 million contract. He wasn't exactly Ochocinco.
Blame the FO for letting Branch and Givens go that year - - but that guy OUTPLAYED his expectations and contract.
re: Sooo....what happens if Brandon Lloyd or Wes Welker goes down?
There are no replacements for welker or Lloyd. If one or both of them go down, the scheme is in big trouble.
Neither Edelman nor slater has done a thing at WR the lest 2 years

Being a Cornerback/PR/KR and a Safety/ProBowl STer will cut into one's snaps at WR.
That being said, NOBODY can do for the Pats what Llloyd and Welker present. Best guess is Gaffney and Branch are both on speed dial and have both been consulted about the next few weeks.

My point wasn't about Caldwell. He was an adequate #3 WR. The point is that an adequate #3 WR was by far their NUMBER ONE receiver. He isn't nearly as good as any of the top 4 guys on the team now. So my point was that the person worrying that we'll be like the 2006 offense need not worry. It's not even close.
re: Sooo....what happens if Brandon Lloyd or Wes Welker goes down?
If a team doesn't pick up Gaffney I could see BB bringin him back with his history and this pre season feel. Branch also could be brought back as well. We DEF Need a WR but I can also A.Hern bein used along with 2 TE set.

no. the patriots will be fine if they have 3 of the 4 big weapons - lloyd, welker, hernandez and gronk. if 2 of them go down it will be the super bowl all over again....
