It only takes one front office out of 31 to panic at the CB position or to view a player with rosy glasses to sign a guy for overpaid $
Yes, Arrington led the league in INTs last year, but is he really a guy who if the Pats lost out on a bidding war in free agency that you would be devastated? He was a good CB last year, but I don't think he is all irreplaceable. In fact, the Pats could have two guys on the roster (Dowling, Dennard) who can replace him.

I don't really see the need to panic-sign a player who should be a CB4.
Not trying to start an argument Deus, but name one team where he would be a CB4? Look at the #2 CBs around the league, are they better than him? AFC East for example: Cromartie, Marshall, Mcgee.

Cromartie was the second best CB in the AFCE last season, behind only Revis, IMO. You've got Arrington ahead of him. There's no way we're going to get anywhere talking about this when we're looking at that big a difference just in the first name listed.
However, just to keep it on the Patriots, take a look at what the Patriots have going for them right now, assuming bounce back and health:
CB1: McCourty
CB2: Dowling
That puts Arrington in a fight for the CB3/CB4 spots if a guy like Dennard shows he can play.

The BOTTOM LINE is that we wait to make sure that Arrington is worth the money, he will sign for someone else. The BOTTOM LINE is that signing Arrington now is a judgement/gamble just like like every other personnel decision.
We (and everyone else) needs 3 starting corners. The nickel plays as many reps as most starters and should be considered a starter. Also it is a very important position. In addition, as a Super Bowl team, we would like to have quality depth.
Most here would like to wait to see if 2 of Dowling, Moore and Dennard are starting material, and the 3rd is quality depth.
My personal WAG is that Arrington does want to sign and would like to wait and cash in. This is likely the case if Belichick takes the same view as many here.
If you have to pay him starting corner money, then you should be happy to show him the door after this season.
The high end of my prediction (6-7 1/2 million per) may certainly be a bit high, I'll give you that, but I think an estimate of about 6 million per is close to what someone will give him.
I agree that I don't want to see him as a starting outside CB, but in the era where you need 3-4 solid CB's due to a higher state of passing + injuries, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see someone give him a pact that is slightly higher or right around that of a guy like Leigh Bodden for example.
I suppose it all depends on his performance this year, hopefully as a slot CB.
Regardless, I seriously doubt that Belichick values him as highly as someone else will, and my humble opinion is that he will not be here next season.
Can you find any team that is paying 3 corners 6mill a year or more? I can't.
By saying he gets that because a team needs 3 (or 4) corners you are saying thats what 3rd corners get. They do not IMO.
If 3rd corners got 6 mill, #1s would get 12 and #2s would get 10.
Most 3rd corners are young players in their rookie contracts, or cheap vets, who didn't rate starter money.

Not at a pc or anything, so I'll take your word on Cromartie. I just remember people like Deion and Garçon owning him. If what you state is true, as Revis is the best CB in the nfl and Cromartie is the second best cb in the afc east, who was giving up the points for the jets?
If Mccourty returns to form, that'd leave us with an All-pro and a young #1 CB talent made of glass as our starters, so obliviously Arrington would be #3 here. If Mccourty wakes up and Dowling plays that is one of the strongest duos in the league.

Their safeties were Godawful, and their LB corps was terrible.

Even a mediocre McCourty would still be starting ahead of Arrington. And, to add Just a note on Dowling which doesn't really say much in defense of Arrington as a starter, Ras I had already replaced Arrington as the starter by the time he got hurt, despite the lack of an offseason.
I just don't see anything that merits him getting a panic-signing.
