Wes Welker Missed Catch Super Bowl 46 - YouTube

At the time, I wasn't really upset with Welker, because of the usual cliches -- 60-minute game, team game, etc.

However, now I've that re-watched the video, I can't help but focus on Welker's non-catch as being pivotal in the loss.

How about the rest of the community?
I kinda shook it off at the time too, but now look at it as having a bigger impact. Still I rank it below the other **** ups in the game.

1. Brady's "intentional grounding."

2. Too many men on the field after the intentional grounding.

3. The D's general inability to get off the field.

4. Brady's poorly thrown deep pass to Gronk that resulted in an interception.

5. Welker's drop.

If Brady didn't ground it, they scored on the first drive, and still executed the 14-point swing; the Pats would have won that game by at least 14. The Giants forced their will with a grinding offense, but if they got behind early they would have abandoned that approach.

I nearly destroyed my couch when #1 happened and almost burnt the house down when #2 happened. By the time #5 happened, the game was already closer than it should have been.

I know right. Hopefully someone makes a David Tyree thread and we can break down the play whether it was Asante or Rodney's fault. Couldn't think of a better way to spend my Saturday morning

A pretty good prioritization of the stupid plays.

On the specific question though; I have ZERO issues with Welker dropping that pass. I have a lot of problem with TB THROWING THAT PASS.

We're ahead and our D has had problems and we need to GRIND OUT THE CLOCK and move down and put points up to put the game away. WHY THE HECK ARE WE THROWING A 50yarder into double coverage.

He just sucked two players deep and we have some of the best short intermediate (TEs) targets in the game; i think someone else was just as open with less ball-flight time for the D to react. AND/OR made use of our pathetically underutilized running game.

TB & BOB should have moved the chains and kept the ball inbounds.

Once again, this validates the necessity of a "new members forum"..

Double coverage? Gronk was single covered and wide open to give us a commanding lead, it was just a terrible throw.

The Welker play is unfortunate. It's still liable to spoil a good half hour of my day anytime I think of it. I mainly feel bad for Welker, or Brady, for that play, knowing how bad they wanted it, and how routine that could have been had they been on the same page.

In my head, I replay that and I see either Brady immediately rifle it in and Welker run down to the 20, or Welker adjust, make a smooth transition and catch it in stride and pretty much run it down to about the 10, where we run it in a few plays later - Brady gets his 4th ring in commanding fashion, cementing best ever status, Belichick gets his revenge on the Giants and willed a make-shift defense to a Super Bowl ring, proving to be perhaps his most impressive ring. And then you remember.

It's annoying.

But I don't blame either guys for the loss. Or the play. There are a ton of plays to obsess about in that loss if you choose to be the OCD type that I am.

They both executed at high levels throughout the game, we don't over-analyze the plays that worked.

No one executes 100% of the time unfortunately, and this huge opportunity unfortunately came at a key time.

I'm sure they have moved on as professional athletes but I might not until we see some football action again in August/September.

Bottom line, thanks for ruining my Saturday morning OP!

If I was unclear, apologies. My double coverage comment was about the welker play. I never said anything specific about the gronk play; that was previous posters' comments.

We probably would have if they won. We'd be talking about how the O-Line did damn good job containing the G-Men's DL and how beautifully executed the 14-point swing was. And if Welker makes that catch, it'd be getting a Manningham catch-type focus. Or if TB makes that throw to Gronk, how awesome that throw was. Or how if my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle.

But hey, they lost, so every discussion about this Super Bowl will play out this way. Forever.

You can either avoid the conversation or talk about it and get over it.

Enjoy your weekend.

1.) He should have made the catch.

2.) You shouldn't have made this thread.

3.) There should be a temporary Mod-enforced moratorium on new Welker threads that don't have breaking news to justify them.
