Default What would you do?

All the analysts are saying there will be 3-4 QB's drafted in the 1st round this year. Obviouly Luck and RG3 are 1 and 2. But then there is a big gap in potential between them and the rest of the QB field. Am I the only one that thinks that, given his performances in preseason games, Brian Hoyer is a STEAL with a 2nd round tender?? I see his potential to be much greater than any other QB in the draft (except the 2), might be signed for less than a 1st rounder, and has 2 years of pro coaching and experience under his belt already...

Why has noone mentioned his name this off season??
Thoughts...

Cos of the Kolb experiment. If we somehow managed to trade Hoyer for a 2nd, I'd consider drafting cousins in the 3rd

I've said it before.

hoyer does not have a body of work to fall back on in the NFL for anyone to consider using a second for him.

As highly as we rate him, I don't see anyone giving a 2nd for him.

His name was mentioned here... Thing is he was a RFA and any team could have had him in and/or signed him to an offer sheet for a 2nd rounder and nobody did thru the first two weeks of FA. He has now signed his tender on the advice of his agent, which likely means they tested his market and found little if any interest in signing him and trading a 2nd. At least as a starter.

That could change on draft day as teams look for alternatives and/or backups as the top 5 candidates exit the board. Or again as camp opens and coaches re-evaluate need or deal with injury. Then the question would become what it it worth to Bill to trade his #2, and I don't think anything less than a #2 would have moved him to because he hasn't yet seen enough out of Mallett to be comfortable with him as the #2 here. He will want to see some growth and development from him vs. his rookie season and that won't become apparent even to Bill until OTA's in May at the earliest and probably not until pre season. And by then it's a little late for trades at the position unless it's to a team running essentially the same system.

People forget that Hoyer passed a 3rd round selection with a season as #2 on his resume in KOC in his first camp in part because KOC failed to improve and develop. Brady passed 2 veteran backups on the depth chart during his first season and held off a veteran FA backup signing in Huard (and actually outperformed the franchise starter) in his sophmore season. Cassel knocked veteran backup Rohan Davey off the roster in his rookie camp and knocked Flutie off the roster the following season.

Bill isn't just looking for developmental starting talent. He's ideally looking for developmental talent with starter potential and leadership qualities that can seamlessly back up Tom Brady within this system in the present. That has a value to him although fans can't always comprehend it.

Mallett>Cousins. If we trade Hoyer, I'd rather get a veteran free agent. No need for two young qb's with no experience behind Brady.

I don't think we've see Hoyer enough in any meaningfull game action to know if he's any good.

I don't care what anyone says, hoyer is a beast. I would take him over flynn and every other qb available in the last 2 years outside of cam newton, andrew luck, and rgIII.

It was mentioned. We had a thread or two on the subject. Hoyer went looking for a starting job, according to reports, but he ended up signing his tender, which would seem to indicate a general lack of interest, at least when you add the draft pick to the buy price.

Exactly that. If he was an UFA, he would be a commodity that commanded a big contract. But I highly doubt that anyone's going to spend a second round pick on a former UDFA whose body of work consists of some preseason snaps.

Uh...discussed here at length...

What do we do regarding Hoyer?

Now that Hoyer has signed, the most likely scenario for him being traded is as I'd speculated late in camp after BB has a better idea of The Hammer's progress and the attrition of summer training camp has a couple clubs down a starter or backup. Hoyer could be traded then for something like a 3rd best case, probably later.
