Can someone please explain why Anthony Gonzalez's base salary is $701K instead of $700K?
I know it sounds like a little thing, but that $1K basically disqualifies his contract from the Minimum Salary Benefit (a UFA like Niko Koutouvides who signs a one-year deal for the minimum salary + a bonus of $65,000 or less counts only as much as a third-year player's minimum salary against the cap). That means ATM the Pats are paying him $1,000 extra, but it costs them an extra $150K or so against the cap.

It may have something to do with his agreeing to the more important item which is his is a split contract, so if he lands on IR even in season they don't have to pay him the full value of the deal.

Seems a rather big risk, though, for $1,000 in extra salary you might not even collect. . . .

That was my initial thought.
No. It's part of the CBA that every vet contract that satisfies the requirements is treated the same.

Maybe BB has designed a play in which all players on offense besides Brady, Gronk, Welker and Gonzalez line up as blockers... Then create a wedge straight at Pollard... And once at Pollards position, the wedge opens to all 4 of those guys taking a shot at his sensitive areas in succession from smallest to largest, with Gronk administering the "Death Blow"!

This strikes me as the same motivation as swapping sixth round picks, or goofing with injury reports.

My shot-in-the-dark guess, given this non-benefit-qualifying, split contract would be that the Patriots value being able to renegotiate with Gonzalez immediately after the season ends, whether he's on IR or on the active roster, over the minor salary cap savings they would get from a qualifying contract.
The Cowboys recently lost Laurent Robinson because they couldn't negotiate with him before free agency opened, as he was playing for them on a qualifying contract, and Jacksonville stepped in with a monster offer; five years, $32.5 million.
The fact that the Patriots decided to invalidate the Minimum Salary Benefit by upping salary $1,000 dollars instead of attaching non-qualifying bonuses means they also consider cutting Gonzalez outright a definite possibility.
So basically: the contract is set-up so that if Gonzalez makes the club, either from the field or the tub, the Pats can quickly lock him up long term.
