As per his statement in OTA's that he had the playbook down pat, the Jets have shown this kid that he doesn't know as much as he thinks he does. Lesson one. Let the coaches coach. After the lesson is impressed upon him, you take him back to step one and coach him up to be good a one thing, then another, etc. baby steps.
What I don't understand is the DC's need to make it public. Wouldn't it be better in the long run for Coples if the Jets as an organization lowered the already over hyped expectations of the rabid Jet fandom. Pat fans won't have to wait until the first game he doesn't have a sack to call him a bust, Jet fans will do it for us. They eat their young.
Its still very early in the process. None of us expect Jones to "breakout" his first year, and we will all be very happy with a "competent" CJones his rookie year. However it has to be disconcerting to Gunny that there haven't been any reports out of Jets camp that Coples has "flashed" any great pass rushing moves yet. Especially since there has been all kinds of Maybin love.
It's the most amazing thing to me,Ken,how Rex and his coaches and players, comment on EVERYTHING.Santonio Holmes,Cromartie and even the owner Woody Johnson just throw stuff out there without realizing that they look like the insane clown posse.
To a lesser degree, the ravens and the steelers have done this, but not from their coaches and assistants.......Coples has the playbook down in may????....I mean how stupid is that.Cromartie is their 2nd best recvr...please child. This train wreck of a team gave Sanchise a huge 2nd contract, just to boost his confidence.....who is he,Tim Geithner?
Landry et al boast that they don't fear the New England tight ends.....you better fear them,my friend.....speaking of TE's.....how can a team desperate for offense, ignore Shiancoe,Fells and Ballard?.....or even Daniel Graham....This is Ground and Pound....with a piddling amout of pound and an excess of Hound(dog).
Finally....thank you God for Rex and the Jets.....it just doesn't get any better than this

Then TELL HIM WHAT TO DO and WHAT NOT TO DO! The more I think about it, the more this "breaking him down" stuff sounds like pure bullshyte. No wonder that team is stuck in reverse.

To whatever extent that the Patriots don't do it, it's probably because they pick guys who don't need to be broken down. Assuming that you're stuck with a ****head like Coples, though, it may be the only option you have.

For now, the Jets' plan is to use Coples in passing situations and as an end in the 4-3, but leave him as a backup when in the base 3-4. "We'll work it from back to front," DC Mike Pettine said of Coples' role. "He'll be a third-down guy, similar to [Aaron] Maybin." Pettine still eventually expects Coples to play 50 to 80 percent of the defensive plays per game. The Jets are desperate for pass-rushing help after Maybin led the team with a meager six sacks last year."
