Chung may well be overrated on these forums, but the notion that Ihedigbo was the superior player last year is...well...unhinged.

I've been hearing this for a LONG time from numerous people who cover the team. Whatever the exact responsibilities of the traditional FS vs. SS in the NFL, the Patriots apparently organize them differently.

We do need a coverage safety back there. Converting one of our corners into a FS full time might not be a bad idea.

“That’s the way it’s been for – really I’d say about the last nine years or so,” Belichick concluded. “From when it was Rodney Harrison and Eugene Wilson, even though Rodney was more of a strong safety and Eugene was more of a free safety, both of those players could play both positions to a degree. Ever since then, we have always, again for the reasons I just talked about, we have tried to have players on our team that have some degree of versatility because the offense forces you to do that.

As I, and others have said repeatedly, the Patriots don't play a true SS/FS system. They play more of a Left/Right safety system.

Of course, what you say is true.

However, there is also a need for safeties who can play center field while the other safety gives run support or blitzes.

The bottom line is that it is not a good thing to have four SS types as our four safeties.

BB says to a "degree". I don't think it's a coincidence that Harrison then and Chung now play closer to the LOS than the other safety playing along them.

Do you think it's a coincidence that it's not always the same safety playing closer to the LOS? Furthermore, Chung has served as the team's nickel in the past. Not just dime, but nickel.

And BB refutes your position. End of story.
