Default Patriots 2012 Special Teams Off-season Preview

Special Teams:

Kicker – Stephen Gostkowski – Gostkoski played extremely well despite coming back from a severe leg injury. With the league moving the kick-off mark from the 30 to the 35, the Patriots had Gostkowski do less touchbacks and allow more returns and allowed many a return to be pinned inside the 20 and the Pats to rate 6th in the league in terms of Kick Return Yardage allowed.

Punter –Zoltan Mesko - Mesko has solidified the Pats punting. They continue to be in the top 10 in terms of Punt Return Yards Allowed.

Long-Snapper – Danny Akin – After going through 3 different long-snappers in the 2011 training camp, the Pats picked Akin up off waivers from Buffalo and haven’t looked back.

Coverage - Two of the Pats best special teams coverage guys are UFAs in Tracy White and Matt Slater. Slater plays on all 6 special teams units and White has been a huge factor in the Pats coverage units getting better. Niko Koutivedes is another Special teamer who I don't see the Pats Bringing back.

If Slater and White are back we are in great shape here. Have to see what rookies create a spot for themselves here on ST's.

"How does (Miami-Ohio offensive lineman Brandon) Brooks not get invited to the combine? How did Vollmer not get invited to the combine? I don't know. We can't really worry about that. We just have to try to evaluate them the best we can."
