To me, Gostkowski is an average kicker, and his middle-of-the-road field goal percentage supports that. I don't get a surge of confidence when he strides onto the field, nor do I get an anxiety attack. I hope that doesn't make me a "hater" in your book. There are times when his play p*sses me off, but that's true for everyone on the team (ok, well, Wilfork never pisses me off! :-) ).
Yes, if you take one season when he's clearly not fully recovered from a major surgery, you can make him look worse than he is. However, Gost is #6 among active FG kickers in percentage, and #7 in NFL history. He's also #3 in PAT% among actives, and #5 in NFL history.

Stephen Gostkowski NFL Football Statistics - Pro-Football-Reference.com

Sorry, but that's not average or middle-of-the-road.

And, before someone gets to the "but on long kicks..." stuff, here is Gost compared to the rest of the 6 on 40+ yarders:

Gost: 71%
Gould: 71%
Hartley: 92% (but on only 13 attempts, and he plays in NOR)
Graham: 74%
Bironas: 77%
Kaeding: 71%

So his numbers fit in with that top group, even from a distance.

I like Gostkowski, but if I tell you I'm confident every time he steps in to attempt a 40-49 yard kick, I'd be lying.

I like him, also, but I don't always trust him. Whether or not his stats warrant that lack of trust, I'm not sure. But that's just the feeling I have and, prior to this year, I did trust him.

Wow. I didn't realize this was even a concern. He's one of the best in the league and should get even better with a lot of years ahead of him. Every week there are kicking lowlights from the previous weekend and I don't think there has ever been one featuring Gostkowski. This isn't an "area of concern".

I have no complaints about him. No one, not even the former kicker who shall not be named was 100%, or even close to that.

He's a damned fine kicker, and New England is fortunate to have him.

Well then you two should probably come to terms with the fact that there probably isn't a kicker in the league you'd be apt to "trust."

Actually, it does matter because they count the yardage into the endzone when it's not a TB.

Agreed, when I saw the title..I was like "Who hates Gostkowksi?"

While I am not extremely confident in him, I am not concerned about HIM. I'm just never confident in any kicker.

The Average return allowed by the Pats is 21.6 YPR.

BTW, the YPR is good for 6th best in the league.

Gostkowski has 34 touchbacks on the year.

Prior to his injury, Gostkowski was averaging just shy of 68 (67.9) YPK.
he'd made 42 kick-offs in 8 games with an average of 24.5 YPR.

And, if you want to talk about Field Goals, Gost was 10-13 through 8 games last year.

People complaining about Gost being 26-31 (the 2nd most FG attempts he's made in his career) need to relax. 3 of the misses have been from 40+ yards.

I'm all for legitimate complaints, but complaining about a guy who is coming off a serious leg injury that directly affects his job performance is one of the things that people need to re-evaluate.
What you forgot to mention that if it weren't for a miraculous last second snag of Miami's Clyde Gate's leg in last weeks game ,we might be talking about just hoping to get the #2 seed....without him reaching out to trip him,Miami goes up 24-7

Do yourself a favor. Get a football. Put it in the freezer. Take it outside and then try and kick a 50 yard FG and tell me how you do. Better yet, tell me how your son does. I'll give you 100 chances to make just ONE.

Gostkowski has missed only 2 from inside of 40 yards this year. Not sure how that warrants the statement that "He seems to miss too many 'easy' FGs".

I would say that you and your son don't understand how hard it is to kick FGs from 40+ yards away.
