SO Purcell gets bucks..on the land..screws a bunch of workers and then makes ANY real run to be competitive look foolish... The Herald was once a morning (Herald) and evening paper..The Traveler..which was a LOT better than what is left now. When the Record American was added in..it became a tabloid..and the evening part was gone...and now..it's even worse.
The only part related to Tomase is the fact that bad editing on the sport pages is a symptom of bad editing in the overall paper.. It's atrocious that there has not been more scrutiny of how that story got published!! WHO are the idiots that let it go through?? Tomase was just an ego driven buffoon looking for a big story..the OTHERS should have had better sense..or were they collectively just as stupid??
Get the paper out to Chicopee..see how many will buy the rag here..late not updated..Purcell is grabbing all he can from it as it sinks..and is gone..

Newspapers?? What are they?? Doe anybody really buy both papers and actually read them nowadays??

I went from Herald & Globe - every day and both on Sunday to only getting Sunday Globe.

I get my news right here, online and there is a much wider selection available, nothing to throw away or clutter up the house.

Of course, they know this, it is all about "hits" today and that is why I really think we can make a difference when "hits" are not made on offending sites - such as the Herald, Fespn and others.

The question should be what percentage of the factor that the Herald is piss poor and probably pays 1/4th of the salary a real paper would pay played into the fact that it employs sub-high school "journalists" and "editors" to play with fire?

We haven't had two newspapers in this town for several years now. We have one plus tabloid fish wrap. That was Purcell's brilliant plan to keep the Herald afloat. His only interest in maintaining two voices in Boston is that one be his.

Once upon a time the Herald's sports department could have saved it, but Purcell managed to kill that too with his tabloid shock journalism mentality. Once he sells the 6 acre lot to developers there won't be anything tangible left to save of the Boston Herald. The only reason to buy in recent years was it was easier to handle on public transit. The move to Chicopee and land sale will buy him another year as a "Boston" publisher to be reconed with. But the handwriting is on the wall, has been for some time now. I doubt if Murdoch will buy back into this market in the current climate even in a fire sale, and he may even be precluded from doing so if he foolishly wanted to. He again owns WFXT, the Fox affiliate in Boston he had to sell to the Celtics ownership to retain the Herald back in the day. He bought it back when it floundered under that ownership after he sold the Herald to his boy Purcell. It was just two years ago that Purcell sold the only money making asset he had managed to add to his holdings, his community newspapers, to supposedly reinvest in the Herald and wipe out it's mounting debts. He had no personal wealth from the outset - Murdoch engineered his ownership of the Herald because he was a favored son employee of the mogul with a pit bull streak. His specialty was squeezing unions and margins to keep his bosses rags like the Post afloat. So once the 6 acres are gone the Herald is reduced to the paper it's printed on. Purcell is a fighter though so he won't go quietly and will likely bankrupt himself in the process of refusing to surrender.

I feel bad for the employees without bylines. The rest of the outfit have little or no sympathy for. Sports reporting or writing in Boston period isn't a birthright, which is what many of them have come to treat it as. It's a priviledge, especially in this era, and one many of them have come to cavalierly abuse as their personal profiles grew. They will either have to settle for post game/mediot debate table scraps or que up in the WEEI stipend line or move into the 21st century perhaps blogging for a living for some national site or freelancing or pounding a beat in another area code... For most it will end what they really craved throughout this, their psuedo celebrity status as Boston multi-mediots and their bs self righteous claim to be first and foremost print journalists - which in their minds always set them apart from mere mediots they hustle alongside to pay those mortgages in Wellesley and Weston.

First part of your comment... love it. That is so funny that the Herald came to the Globe with their hat in hand.

Second part about Purcell...

The Herad was competing on the strength of its sports coverage. Pissing off the Patriot fans was a big mistake that had to have put huge financial pressure on them. It makes it all the more incredulous that they came out with that lousy non-apology apology as late as they did.

Even though their apology was too late and was pathetic, they at least had everyone's attention and many of us lifted our bans to give them one last chance to humble themselves and possibly win us back. What does the Herald do? They send out Masarotti to stab us in the back. Great Move! I knew right then that the Herald had sealed their own fate. That paper is going under.

I think Purcell knows it to. You may be right about what he will do, but if he has any brain at all, he will keep the profits from that land sale and take ANY deal he can get to keep printing ONLY if it results in a profit. Fire as many employees as you have to so long as you don't lose money. They minute that rag loses money again, you sell it off in a firesale... take anything you can get for it and go retire with the land profits still in hand.
